Yeah.. Maybe, you know, calm down a little bit and realize that we don't actually hate you and were just having a discussion about whether or not to review films you haven't entirely seen. It wasn't anything personal, and you are not (nor is anyone, really) a worthless piece of shit.
I have become very unsure how to handle this situation..

Re: Annoying Criticisms
We're relieved things seem to be cooling down here... in the happy, colorful playland that is the Criticker Forums, this thread is causing an Alert Level Orange. Fluffy, the "Let's Be Friends" Bunny, has grabbed her bazooka.
One of the most difficult things about moderating forums is ensuring that everything stays civil. We've always wanted to maintain an atmosphere that is cordial, but also respectful of disagreement. Arguments are fine, insults not so much. As has been noted here, everyone's opinions are valid, and no one should be made to feel stupid as a result of expressing themselves.
Sometimes this is easy to patrol (I call a particular user "a fuckhead", I'm being abusive). Other times, it's more difficult (I describe anyone who gave Amelie a high score as "a worthless idiot pile of shit"). The latter kind of put-down can hurt someone's feelings, even though it's not directed to anyone specific. Our policy has always been to moderate direct insults, and discourage the indirect kind.
We're all friends here... at least, as friendly as we can be without ever having actually met one another. The fact that people rank films differently is what makes our conversations possible, and fun to have. But, it's no fun for anyone if things get personal.

I contacted Horrormaster by PM and I think (hope) things are fine now. Never meant to step on any toes, I was honestly trying to keep a civil discussion going. Sorry things got out of hand, if it was in any way my fault.

Re: Annoying Criticisms
I guess it bugs me when people criticize a movie by taking for granted that it's bad without really giving it a fair shake. For example, Showgirls is a popular target for being labeled irredeemably awful. There are some people who will watch it and legitimately make that assessment because they just don't like that sort of movie based on personal taste. Other people, however, might watch it and actually be positively entertained on some level but still label it as irredeemably awful just because it is popular to do so. My philosophy is that if you are entertained by a movie for whatever reason, and experience positive feelings toward it, then it should be rated accordingly. I get annoyed when people say that they were entetained by a movie but still give it a poor rating.

Particularly on a site like this where you're supposed to get recommendations based on taste similarities, it doesn't make sense to rate a movie poorly if you actually liked it. For all I know, there are people on here that have similar tastes to mine but rate movies based on factors other than how much they actually enjoy them. If I'm entertained by a movie and look forward to watching it again repeatedly, I'm gonna rate that sucker to reflect the joy that it brings me. That's why Showgirls gets a higher rating from me than Citizen Kane. While I believe there are people who really do like Citizen Kane enough to give it a really high rating, I have to wonder if everybody who does so actually enjoys it that much.
Don't be ashamed! It's OK to like and dislike the "wrong" movies! Rate movies for yourself, not other people! Here endeth the lesson.
