Top 5 Director Averages

Post by AFlickering »

I'm only including directors by whom I've seen 2 or more films, though I might do another list with a 3 minimum when I can be bothered. People who've seen a lot more movies than me might want a higher minimum, or alternatively not waste their time on this thread. :(

Mine:
1. Andrei Tarkovsky 95.33 (3 films)
2. Wong Kar-Wai 93.5 (2 films)
3. Satoshi Kon 93 (2 films)
4. Akira Kurosawa 92.67 (6 films)
5. Milos Forman 91.5 (2 films)

Interesting that Forman sneaked onto the list, bet he'll drop pretty quickly when I see some of his less known works. Also interesting but not really surprising that my favourite director Herzog isn't up there - the score was dragged down by Nosferatu and Even Dwarfes Started Small even though they're still good.

How did you get this? Did you actually run all of your films average? Because I haven't seen Averages since Criticker got an update. Oh, and by the way, I miss the top 10 feature.

I guess manually (by checking some of his fav. directors).

You can find the averages here for example: http://www.criticker.com/?pl=d&id=557
sadly, no top 5/top10 list.. yet

Yeah, I did manually check director pages, I didn't work out the averages myself though, I'm not quite that sad.

A top 10 feature for things like this would be excellent. I'm not so bothered about the old top ten feature because there's a far more varied amount of available top 10 lists just by varying the "Films you've seen" filter anyway.

Well, I didn't look up EVERY director, but the most likely candidates, and came up with:

1. Anh-Hung Tran - 94.67 (3 films)
2. Ming-Liang Tsai - 92.56 (9 films)
3. Emir Kusturica - 88.43 (7 films)
4. Kenji Mizoguchi - 86.5 (6 films)
5. Francois Truffaut - 86.22 (9 films)

While these are all among my favorite directors, the ones I'm REALLY fanatical about (Bergman, Herzog, Hitchcock, Bunuel, Satyajit Ray, Kurosawa) have lower scores. This is because they have large bodies of work and I've tried to see as much of it as I can... including their failures. Tran, Tsai, and Kusturica haven't done a whole lot. And Mizoguchi and Truffaut each have a LOT of films I haven't seen yet.

Here are my scores for the ones AFlickering posted:

Andrei Tarkovsky 73.57 (7 films)
Wong Kar-Wai 75.86 (7 films)
Satoshi Kon 53 (1 film)
Akira Kurosawa 81.92 (26 films)
Milos Forman 79.14 (7 films)

As far as the numbers go, using a minimum of three movies, it's...
Masaki Kobayashi - 96.33 (3 films)
Jean-Pierre Melville - 95.5 (4 films)
Orson Welles - 94.66 (3 films)
Akira Kurosawa - 93 (12 films)
Sergio Leone - 92.8 (5 films)

Honorable Mentions:
Francois Truffaut - 96 (Only 2 films, but I still gotta throw his name down)
Billy Wilder - 92 (4 films)
Martin Scorsese - 90.8 (5 films)
Alfred Hitchcock - 90.33 (6 films)
Jules Dassin - 90.33 (3 films)
Stanley Kubrick - 89.79 (14 films)
Otto Preminger - 87.25 (4 films)

But if I had to list my actual five favorite directors in order, it would be Kubrick > Kurosawa > Scorsese > Kobayashi > Leone.

This was an interesting test. I would consider the results a good barometer of the films I like today, though those excluded from my list reminded me that I need to revisit some Dreyer (81.11) and Tarkovsky (83.75), two filmmakers I like a great deal. I also need to see more later Ford (79.15). I suspect all those numbers will rise. I also decided to only include directors when I'd seen at least five of their films. Otherwise, I would also have Wong (88), Ozu (88.33), and Satyajit Ray (96.67). My top five:

1. Robert Bresson - 96.44 (9)
2. Tsai Ming-liang - 88.63 (8)
3. P.T. Anderson - 88 (5)
4. Orson Welles - 87.4 (5)
5. Charles Chaplin - 86.1 (10)

Coen Brothers - 88.75%
Hayao Miyazaki - 86.13%

Jonathan Demme - 83 (2)
Ingmar Bergman - 79.5 (2)
Edward Zwick - 79 (2)
Richard Linklater - 77 (6)
Shane Meadows - 76.67 (3)

Although, I think I am more of a screenwriter type.

The funny thing is, one of my highest averages for anyone is Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald, with 81. That score may shoot up once I see No Country.
