The Sound of Music

I will grade on a curve since this was live but Mrs. Underwood can't act and somehow her vocals can't match Julie Andrews. It also loses a lot from gentrifying several aspects of the story which hit harder in the film version.

Underwood is six years older than Andrews was when she played the role, but it feels like twenty. She seems way to old for this role. In fact, seeing her in all her aryan blond hausfrau getup, I can't help but wonder, if she would have been passable as the nazi-leaning baroness. Maybe in a smaller role, she wouldn't be saying each line as if she's in a middleschool production of the musical. And I'm going to go against the consensus and say that I wasn't impressed with her singing either.

Underwood can sing but lacked in the acting compared to the rest, and Moyer was way too intense. The musical version is always different from the movie but too many punch lines had been re-written to a point where it's so obvious that you notice again and again. McDonald was definitely the highlight. *Okay

Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer can't act worth a damn, and that definitely hurts, but this is still unfairly maligned and enjoyable in its own right. It's nowhere NEAR the level of quality of the classic Julie Andrews film, but a major highlight is Audra McDonald's unbelievable performance as the Mother Abbess, which alone is worth watching this once for.
