Space action, world-spanning political intrigue, spaceships spaceships spaceships. All very intelligent, one of the best sci-fi shows in the history of Solar system. Also one of the too rare beasts, having six seasons AND a great ending.

The good: The idea that space is a place you could get killed in 10 000 different ways is good. There is an immediate sense of danger. The bad: politics is naive, the writing is ambitious but predictable and soap operatic. Why is this show beloved? My psi was 85. I sense there is a tribalist, parochial limited love of the sci-fi genre that forego any critical faculty. This desperately wanted to be the next Galactica or Firefly, but falls short of what is expected of a high-end TV series in 2022.

A little slow, and the combination of casting and cinematography make the actors indistinguishable. It does have a compelling story though, that really comes together at the end of the first season. From the 2nd and 3rd seasons, this is becoming one of my favourite shows. The depth of characters, the complexity of the narrative, and the season payoffs really make it worth watching.

There are some shortcomings, but it's such a beautiful piece of sci-fi art. They got near-future space opera right, which no other series of movie has been able to do so far. Not only that, but they managed to tell a complicated story with a satisfying ending, which is beyond rare in TV nowadays. Great show, if you're unsatisfied with the stories left to tell consider the show an ad for the books: they're even better, read them.

S5. Grand space opera done right. A very mature show with more or less consistent quality throughout its five seasons. Even the nowadays standard diversity and inclusivity casting doesn't feel forced down our throats as in almost every contemporary show and film, but is elegantly executed and feels natural. Great characters (Thomas Jane is spectacular), intricate but simple to follow plot (i.e. graciously unfolded) and a thoroughly entertaining and well-written story. Highest recommendation.

Not a big fan of sci-fi AT ALL. The Expanse changed that for me. I fell in love with it visually (guys, dial down on the blueness please). Zero-G sequences, spaceship battles and maneuvers, space walks... all perfectly crafted. Unfortunately, that's about it. 5 seasons in and I'm still unconvinced by the plot (season 3 and onwards). Acting was very shaky. Chatham, by far the best. His polar opposite? Aghdashloo. Casting her was a terrible mistake. S1: 80 | S2: 85 | S3: 80 | S4: 70 | S5: 80

Season 1: Dark, moody, verbose, with overexplaining dialogue; a bit lengthy, barely interesting enough to keep watching. Season 2: The story is coming together nicely, but it still could be shorter and more concise. Season 3 got me hooked; however, it meanders around in the second half. Season 4 is strangely focused and feels "empty", and the ending is unsatisfying. Season 5 goes along like before; lacking commitment and clear story progression. Season 6 is an ending, at least.

Amazing sci-fi, delivering on all fronts. It *expands* on our current political issues and makes them planetary. Political drama, interpersonal drama, deep character development, weird love story... ALL IN SPACE! The series truly feel unique and extremely engaging. It manages to show humanity in different scenarios throughout the seasons, every one of which - exciting and yet again showing people's true colors. Beautiful show, easy recommendatiton.

a bit too slow and got repetitve as seasons went on. too much battles and cheesy dialogue that don't progress the story meaningfully. the central mystery of the story was not fleshed out properly (possibly because the last 3 books were not adapted).

I had a ton of fun watching this. It's captivating, adventurous, and awe inspiring. I recommend watching. My one complaint is the ending but with budget cuts and amazon making mistakes, they had to push the story along.

like GOTs, I like what it teases at being— mysterious existential horror while nested in found family. but it fails pretty pleasantly/luxuriantly, and i want more of it.

Such an amazing series. Cleverly written, with incredible details that I loved. It's about humans, science, space, aliens (but not as you would expect!) and love; all together to make an enchanting story. I loved it. Update: didn't deliver the ending I was expecting, so I'm not giving it 90+. But still, it's the journey not the destination.

It was billed as fresh new sci-fi writing but it really just respins classic film and movie stereotypes all over the place. Some of the science (ie: the projectiles) are a meager step up from previous franchises. Otherwise not provocative at all. It's reused space intrigue with a near-clockwork repetition of noire and gore.

My rating after watching the first two seasons. This is how you are supposed to handle hardcore sci-fi stories. The overall political background is brilliant, the suspense is tangible and the characters are just wonderful. It twists and turns endlessly and reveals itself without taking any shortcuts. I like the way the setting is created, the early space opera where the troubles of space travel, and terraforming are real is not as explored as the Star Trek/Star Wars kind of Galactic settings.

Deviates way too much from the books. But considering that the books and series can be two different things, this was alright. And......Avasarala, my goodness! I think I've found my favorite badass lady right here!

One of the better sci-fi series ever, balanced between nerds' "ohmagad teh science is so accurate" and normies' "Holy shit wtf did just happen?!" plot and characters. And finally a show which doesn't feature only white Americans as the only people in space. My biggest problem with people considering this incredible is that it's just on par with every high tier HBO classic series, which is an accomplishment on its own.

Brilliant visuals and attention to detail (except for the wide open spaces inside the spaceships), coupled with the most realistic physics of any space-related science fiction show. Sadly, the rest (story, acting) isn't on par, but it's alright. Still very much worth watching.

Excellent space opera that is very rough around the edges. It reminds me greatly of Serenity. Most of the action is quite good, with only spotty evidence of plot holes, lame dialog, and bad scenes. I absolutely adored Shohreh Aghdashloo in this. There were many charismatic characters. Lots of clever and twisted subplots, although they routinely roll out the worst of humanity. The hot Martian girl sounds Australian. Overall it was highly entertaining and very exciting. Worthwhile and fun.

Shohreh Aghdashloo is the worst actress in history. Also a bunch of military propaganda along the way. -15 points for the finale that tied up zero lose ends. the fatal illness, the son-mother relationship, the protomolecule arch...

S1: 55 | S2: 60 | S3: 65 | S4: 65 | S5: 50 | A rough start, mainly due to the characters (Although Amos really grew on me) and lack of “fun” sci-fi moments. It picked up for me at the last two episodes of S2. S3 was consistently enjoyable, and 4, while not quite as good as 3, had vastly improved CGI thanks to Amazon acquiring it. S5 is unfortunately dull from start to finish.

Definitely better suited for television than print. The standing and sitting talking scenes with the U.N. leaders are dull, don't integrate well with rest of show- almost Star Wars prequel like. Occasional nods to physics are a step in the right direction. Too much plot convenience getting the main characters into the action- they seem to have free run of the one space port, it's leader tells them every secret, and they can race off in their ship whenever they feel like.

Saw the first season, and kind of enjoyed it, I mean it looks great, but I relied on Wikipedia episode summaries and online cast photos to hold my hand through understanding the labyrinthine plot. Then I started season 2, watched the first 2 episodes and didn't recognize barely anyone, and didn't understand anything, ANYTHING that was happening. I immediately deleted the remaining 11 season 2 episodes and cancelled season 3. I conclude that this was made solely for fans of the book series.

The first season flips back and forth between the world-weary derring-do of a space crew, the even wearier world of political intrigue, and, weariest of all, the noirish investigations of a detective. The (perhaps temporary) elimination of the latter, part way through the second season, leaves the remaining episodes lacking the existential desperation of the first season, but the creation of a world, story and characters are all better than usual, despite some inevitable weaknesses.

Excellent up until the opening of the ring gates, at which point it's just "good" for the remainder of the series. Those first 3 seasons are the best space opera TV has gotten, along with S1 of BSG. The weakest link isn't Aghdashloo as others say, it's Steven Strait being uncharismatic and so much of the latter half of the show relies on everyone hanging on his every word. lmao at GRRM failing to write one book in the time it took his assistant to write a 9 book series + this entire adaptation.

1x01-1x04: far too many scenes makes me think "bad dialogue lifted straight from the book" - some creative reinterpretation would have benefited this show greatly. Unfortunately, probably beyond the capabilities of the writers/directors who can barely keep things visually logical (unrestrained prisoner talking to the captain he just met? no problem). 1x06: man opens space suit visor to hard vacuum with no problems. I give up.
