Strange stuff. Mahler's ambitious and incisive account of NYC in '77 becomes an unwieldy ESPN miniseries (its first airing featured the score ticker) that relegates nearly every thread but the Yankees' to fuzzy stock footage. The baseball scenes get the worst of it, real game tape jarringly intercut with hideous rear projection and the actors' dugout histrionics. The histrionics, thankfully, are pretty fun--dig that tension between Turturro's plastic ears and Platt's genuine jowls.
