For being so very heartwarming, it actually isn't bad. The 72-year-old Bette Davis as flight instructor--and Texas cafe-owner (!)--is a little weird, but she pulls it off like the pro that she was. Word is she that at first she was miffed at having to work with such a young, inexperienced director (it was one of Ron Howard's first movie projects), but she soon recognized his abilities and warmed to him completely. He clearly wanted to make good, and kept his worst warm-fuzzy instincts in check.
