Groundhog Day for hipsters, chock-full of paper-thin characters that are fleshed out through drugs, sex, and progressiveness! Throw in a witticism here and a cult movie reference there--and the Juno-watching millenial who just turned 30 will eat. it. up. This is a series that could have been written by tumblr back when it still had porn on it. Or by the current batch of Vice editors. It's all sound and fury, but in a Buzzfeed listicle that ends with "Yasss get it, girl"

In terms of the sci-fi concepts, it really nicely starts out in familiar Groundhog Day territory and then eases you into interesting additional twists/complications on top of that, without ever feeling like things were added just for the sake of originality. The puzzle is just the right amount of intellectually engaging. And, most importantly, it really cares about its characters in a way that makes it engaging on an emotional level. Plus it is funny.

I thought this was a new classic. Some of the best performances I've seen in ages. Genuinely fascinating plotting and so funny, really ran the gamut of emotions several times watching this. Can't stop thinking about it. EDIT: Oh Russian Doll you just had to come back eh? Well, season 2 is pretty good honestly but Lyonne lost all cred for me when she did a massive coca cola ad. I don't care about deserving actors getting their bag but you can't play this kind of character at the same time imo.

A dark and fun series that is a fresh take on the "Groundhog Day" formula. Natasha Lyonne is exceptional and her performance is a big part of what makes with series great.

With a performance that should get some attention when it's time to hand out Emmys and Golden Globes, Lyonne creates an often obnoxious, but always highly memorable character.

Around episode 4, this starts ascending. Absorbing and well paced. Lyonne has created and starred in a little gem of a series.

A wonderful surprise! Starts off like a light "Edge of Tomorrow" but centred on a late 30s woman with issues living in NYC, and for the first few episodes this plays out much as you would expect. However the introduction of a new character really changes the narrative at the mid way point and things continue to get really interesting and surprisingly dark from there. With only 4 hrs spread across 8 episodes, Russian Doll is frequently funny, surprising, intriguing and well worth a watch.

Gets godawful and corny after a while, but Lyonne falling down the stairs like five times was legit great. I wish Adrienne Shelly could have been in this instead.

Intelligently written high concept dramedy made with great care by Natasha Lyonne, who also delivers an impressive lead performance. I was totally engaged and appreciated almost all aspects, but I'm having trouble formulating any deeper thoughts about it. It's pretty short and should just be experienced.

There's really no reason why you should be watching this instead of Groundhog Day.

Season 1's gotta be a 90+. Unfortunately, the long wait for season 2 wasn't worth it, and so I can't really go any higher than 80 overall.

Season 1 was fun, nothing new but pretty fun. Outrageous character full of flaws learns… nothing at all, but it's fine I guess. Allows her to get trapped into season 2, in which she… gets worse than she used to be? Oh no, I don't like the main character. Time to stop watching. Fun show though.

Skeptical at first since, like Fleabag, it's a show about a seemingly unapologetically terrible, prickly avoidant tsundere. But honest; doesn't glamorize the antihero like so many other modern shows. Friendship dynamics are sympathetic & real, not merely glib, contrived to seem "hip" & stylishly aloof. The pacing and plot elements are well executed. They keep it from getting stale as her life loops. Weirdly has a lot of heart. 98 for S1. 68 for S2. S1 lives rent free in my heart.

I checked out of Season 1 after some episodes, because it was too hipster self-satisfied and random for me. Now, Season 2 is both the best NYC comedy-drama since "Louie" and the victim of its worst impulses, i.e. creativity. Sure, it's inventive and surreal and a trip, but no story develops, just threads that are followed through time and back again. All the hyperactivity hides a lack of discipline.

☆ I love Natasha Lyonne. Her personality is so compelling. But some of her dialogue felt stiff and unnatural, and the story line felt very inconclusive by the end of even the second season. I don't feel super attached to any of the characters either. ☆

early some moments in the story had me intrigued enough, happened a few more times and i ended up liking the characters a good amount, mainly nadia. but their ending resolutions felt unearned, cool twist saving each other but was also handled kinda meh

Natasha Lyonne is really good in this, and it's one of the best, most unique feeling attempts at recreating the "Groundhog Day" formula I've seen. Unfortunately, the second season wasn't anywhere near as good. Started out cool, but the writers clearly couldn't figure out where to take the show.

Full of metaphors. Good story and concept. Excellent performance. The last episode is disappointing and in my opinion, seventh episode is enough for concluding the show.

It occurred to me while watching this that I don't think I've ever seen a dark comedy sci-fi film/"TV series" before. If I have, it certainly wasn't this dark and/or clever. This is one of the most satisfying shows I've seen in a few years. The detail of sophistication is unprecedented. Unlike most shows (even ones I like), I look forward to the next installment as the first one has opened so many possibilities that would be fun to explore. Thankfully, it's also signature Natasha Lyonne humor.

I was hooked after the first few episodes. There was so much buzz, so much intrigue, I was really into it. But I've now finished the series and I don't really feel anything approaching satisfaction with how it all came out.

Anchored by an astonishing performance by Natasha Lyonne (who also created and wrote for this, holy shit), Russian Doll is so inventive, textured, and funny as hell, while also somehow managing to be super moving. Life is a box of timelines, but if you open up the Russian Dolls you find strong character cores inside and the belief that we, as people, can help each other move on from trauma. How radical is that?

I disagree with the shows read on depression and trauma and - especially - its cures. I think in the end people around us can only guide us to the door, they don't push us through it. They don't pull us away from not-stopping cars. We have to look (at) ourselves. Yet, the way Russian Doll presents its argument it compelling. Carried by a great soundtrack, good acting, casting, and filigree writing.
