Can anyone explain to me why everyone in the North Pole is a gigantic dick to anyone who is different at all? It's worse than a middle school up there.

Hermey, our little makeshift dentist, is desperate to spring into action when it means ripping the teeth out of the snow monster, but he doesn't have a single word of advise for Yukon Cornelius who can't keep his filthy pickaxe out of his mouth.

There's an awful lot of repressed rage going on in the North Pole. And why is Santa such a dick? He basically says you should feel ashamed of a deformity unless it serves a useful purpose. More to the point, why does Hermes look different from all the other elves, and why wasn't he ostracized for this? Then you have that tall elf from accounting? what? Lots of fucked up shit went down in 1964.

As far as cheesy christmas movies go, it's not bad. It does feel like there were two competing visions here, though, as it goes back and forth between sappy and slightly gruff.

The last of the Rankin/Bass stop motion Christmas specials is easily the most famous, and probably the best in most people's eyes.
The film is pretty much a morality story about how being an individual, despite being shunned by your peers, can eventually turn in your favor.

Genial Christmas fable no doubt plays even better if childhood nostalgia is thrown into the mix (not present in my case), but the good spirits and modestly effective character work get the job done, even as some of the padding turns the ancillary characters (especially Santa) in a somewhat monstrous direction! Ives' dulcet tones prove the perfect guide through this disposable but still fun piece of festive entertainment.

Admirable that pretty much every song in this special became a smashing christmas hit. Great sound and orchestration. I love Burl Ives' singing the most

Watching as an adult, it's irritating that there isn't any real effort put into why Santa & Co. hate Rudolph's nose. It doesn't make sense for Santa to be a bigot against just one single reindeer because his nose is a different color. Nor does it make sense that a bunch of jolly elves hate this one particular elf because he has dreams. I get the moral themes & message behind those things, but they're just lazily written and that bugs older me. Anyway, Yukon Cornelius is amazing. What a guy.

Yes, it's definitely dated, although the film's message is eternally relevant, but it's hard to dislike this nostalgic holiday classic, with its imperfect stop motion animation and unbridled holiday cheer.

Holy shit was this ever terrible. The animation, acting sound effects all were poorly done at best and grating at worst. This was my first watch and maybe because I didn't grow up with this but I have no nostalgia or warm feeling from watching this even though I knew most if not all the songs from the radio.

(Rewatch: new fav scene: dogs jumping onto sled while guy pulls.) Nice children's classic w/some dark overtones to start discussions with kids when they get older. Overall a good message, but yeah, slave-driver Santa sucks and Donder is a terrible father. Why does the island of misfit toys have a king? Hermey is totally gay and that's okay. The stop motion is great and the fur looks distinctively amazing. Not a fan of what they did to the poor snow monster. Fav scene: island of misfit toys.

A true blue holiday classic for the ages. The limitations of the animation and budget are offset by a wonderful story strung together with very catchy songs. The films of course drips with holiday spirit and probably can't be enjoyed any other time of the year. Given the intention, the film is fantastic.

Christmas specials are genuinely awful, but this film has somehow managed to be timeless. I remember watching this countless times as a kid and each time I found myself wishing that something like Pokemon or Digimon would come on already (I was a simple boy back then). The animation, for its time, was fairly unique and creative while also being fairly charming, but otherwise, it's fairly mundane tripe with the oddly memorable song here and there.

This is just good times. The story's a bit on the cheesy side, but there is so much to love here. Burl Ives has a great turn as the voice of the narrating snowman. The Bumble scenes are fantastic in every way. And most of all, few characters in the history of the cinematic form are as consistently funny as Yukon Cornelius. I look forward to watching this with the kids every year.

Oh snap! I didn't even know this would be on here, but i must say this movie has never lost any of its awesomeness over the years. It never plays at the god-awful 5 hours like the other stop-motion Holiday specials...and there are enough memorable quotes and songs in this movie you can rant to yourself all 12 months out of the year.
