Porridge represents the pinnacle of what I imagine a great BBC situation comedy to be. Underneath the jokes and 'risky' gags there is an utterly non-clichéd humanism which respects the honesty and dignity of the ordinary man. Today's BBC3 executives would have destroyed this.
