Its surreal nature, adult themes, and dependence on old fairy tale lore reminded me a lot of Spirited Away (I mean Auntie Whispers seems like she could be Yubaba and Zeniba's lost sister). Additionally, OtGW maintains an incredibly contemporary self-awareness and humor that it marries beautifully with absurdist horror. Part of its success comes from the fact that even though it is feature movie length, its episodic format adds to the oneiric quality and carefully crafted eerie atmosphere.

Charming, bizarre, eerie, funny, absurd, and fascinating. Very much in the tradition of The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, but with a decidedly modern twist. Wonderful.

At the same time silly and scary, modern and old fashioned, and both childish and very adult in story and style, OtGW stands as a wonderfully surreal, dark and heartfelt piece of animation. Think Americana folk lore meets Miyazaki-lite.

A charming slice of melancholy Americana that doesn't overstay its welcome. It's surreal, but never aggressively so, and it really respects the characters and lets them grow. Goes to show you that maybe the dark isn't so scary after all.

A wonderful throwback to the children's tales of old, effortlessly balancing the whimsical carelessness of childhood with the unknowable darkness surrounding it. I am amazed and thrilled that something like this exists, especially given it's high production value.

These pretty neat fairy tales are charming enough, but they also felt a bit insubstantial. I was on the fence for the first eight episodes and prefer the last two in which the shenanigans become a bit more grounded. Greg's epic elephant costume also earns the series some extra points.

I could not have expected to fall in love with this as deeply as I did. Over The Garden Wall is perfect in almost every respect. I am left a mess of so many emotions, all of which I don't know what to do with. So strange, so amazing, and so genuine. Fantastic.

Even after seeing screencaps and memes of this for years, it surprised me in multiple ways. It's weird, atmospheric, cute, creepy, and fun, with good characters and a strong narrative.

Stunning animated piece that manages to feel like a fully fleshed out series despite its shortened format. Pays homage to American folk traditions while simultaneously making those same genre works feel fresh and interesting.

The first time I saw it I was like "huh?" and now I rewatch it pretty much every month. I'm not sure how to describe it to people who haven't seen it. The story is modern but it draws from ancient sources and that makes the show feel like it's thrumming along a primordial ley line, blasting your brain with the essence of old tales we've told for centuries. It gets into your bones without you even noticing. It's even spiritual in a way I can't quite describe. It's perfect.

Takes the best, surreal elements of Adventure Time and dispenses with the cutesy, marketable bullshit to make something truly special.

The first 8 episodes are a lot of fun, surreal and playful and capturing some childhood and adventure very well. The last two are a bit more grounded and have a noticeable shift in tone, but they're still fun enough.

There are undoubtedly some brilliant, creepy moments scattered throughout, mostly in the first few episodes, but I didn't really like it overall. Animation was not so hot, and it's hampered by conservative storytelling and characterisation, as can be seen most plainly in the final two episodes which undermine the whole fantastic theme. Still interesting and the soundtrack is very good.

Not for me. I was hoping it'd be a weird/quirky cartoon that would appeal for adults, but far from it. It was too conventional, boringly monotonous, and un-innovative. I thought Collin Dean was brillant, his lines were endearing and witty and his voice acting really good.

Charming, imaginative, humorous, full with metaphors and a little bit dark... **spoiler alert! - Lost brothers within the woods as an analogy of Dante's Inferno gets into your bones directly. ** Perfect!

Once in a while a show comes along that is (almost) perfectly executed. Over the Garden Wall runs for 10 episodes totalling ~2 hours, which allows it to setup its characters and establish its whimsical, ethereal world in which they have a few adventures along their journey before overcoming the main obstacle. Its tight pacing, eerie atmosphere and short injections of humour into an otherwise dark story makes it a great watch. A Halloween classic, at least in my eyes.

I don't get the praise for this? I mean, the animation and music was probably the best thing going for it, but the story and characters were pretty bland to me and nothing seemed that special about it. Many episodes felt like filler with little progress to the main story and that was kind of frustrating. The show was just being weird for no good reason. The humour wasn't that great and felt kiddy to me personally. Either way, I didn't click with it that much and maybe it wasn't my cup of tea.

Feels like a western Spirited Away. The plotline meanders about and jumps to and fro towards the middle of the series, but it finds a heartfelt, albeit safe conclusion. All the while it exudes charm through it's terrific voice-acting and soundtrack, one of the best I've heard in an animated work. The animation though is inconsistent, some episodes it feels more inspired than others; however it remains imaginative throughout, and creates a world you wouldn't mind getting lost in. Ominous yet cute

Lunatic meandering of a plot that's not quite there. The beginning was good, the middle is boring and random for random's sake, and the end was weird. The end gives a flashback which was nice albeit a bit late. And the last episode was rushed, forced and incoherent. They tried to brush aside the plot holes with stunning graphics, and seeing as many liked it, they succeeded. Also, the little brother is so annoying; this makes it hard to watch to. It's not an awful series but as good as s

starts off with great promise with a menacing first episode, second is a bit creepy, third not at all, or fourth, or fifth - just a fairly humdrum 'quirky' cartoon. It's watchable but I couldn't be bothered investing further time in the rest of the tale

Two brothers, lost in the woods, pass through a series of vignette stories that look the way October smells. It's subtle, funny, unsettling, and has Christopher Lloyd in it. He makes a lot of indiscernible grumbling sounds and then Elijah Wood gets all flustered by it. It's a great time.
Seriously though, it is. You should watch it. And then watch it again, because you'll pick up on more clever details the second time. It's that kind of story, and I'm so glad I found it.
