This pulled me in, and the suspenseful scene at the end of the fifth episode was super effective. Overall, the show belongs to Winslet who gives a performance that's simply incredible. It might even be her best one yet.

Starts quite strongly, and the gritty tone pulls you in for the first few episodes, before everything descends into yet another glorified soap opera, with far too much time dedicated to the boring, convoluted relationships in the town rather than the murder mystery storyline at its heart. Good performances but they're meaningless when you couldn't care less what's happening with the characters. A bit like a yank Broadchurch, but even with its faults that series was better than this.

The star studded cast is just the tip of the iceberg on how good this mini-series is. It features a large complex story with many interesting players and subplots. Smart writing and convincing acting. Kate Winslet elevates everything she's in and she is as real as it comes. Julianne Nickolson and Guy Pearce were also notable. Cailee Spaeny was too cute in this. Brutally sad at times. Worthwhile, immersive, entertaining, and engaging.

They did the 'cop investigating murder while their life is falling apart' formula pretty well. I like Zobel as a filmmaker (ever since Compliance), the cast was great and the writing subtle. And y'know, Kate is always a powerhouse so no surprise there. It's a story about peaking early in life, then getting stuck and fucking up and then moving forward. Like life!

It's a rare thing, because it's so delicate, to have a piece full of reprehensible characters that you somehow still feel invested in. Each person has (at least one, if not many) a moment where they clearly and soberly decide to violate their principles and yet - yet - each is provided an opportunity of grace. If you sit and think about the plot long enough you'll want to punch a wall, but, what is life but not a cumulative series of errors with an audience willing to see through them?

Maybe too written in the last episodes and it even has one filler to spare, showcasing how its twist-inducing nature is far from the hard-boiling procedural, family drama established in the first three chapters. Still, good cast and Winslet is just hauntingly precise.

It's full of cliches and it's just so unrealistic how basically half the town has 100 clues pointing to them as the killer. Actually reminds me a bit of Twin Peaks, but played totally earnestly. And somehow it mostly works. I think Kate Winslet is most to thank for that.

While the show started off strong showing great potential, it pretty quickly dwindles into a sea of cliches before finally jumping the shark during the second to last episode. Winslet is great, as always, but her presence alone is not quite enough to make a mediocre show great, or really even something worth watching. The large cast of characters and their relation to one another was a bit convoluted at time, at least for me. I think I may have enjoyed this more had I viewed it in one sitting.

So so good. There are definitely some issues with this including the ridiculously complicated ending but none of that matters because Kate Winslet and Evan Peters are gifts that should be cherished. Very entertaining. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

A great show that brings Central Pennsylvania/small town America into the limelight. A genuinely character driven story with a somewhat predictable ending to the mystery.

Not just a crime story, but a very well written series about relations between people in a little village - all of them interesting characters. It shows how guilt and traumas can affect the lives of people. There is so much wisdom to be found in it, a deep understanding of layers in the human psyche - but, at the same time, a constantly exciting thriller.

Me surpreendeu bastante. Série curta e com dosagem certa de todos os elementos necessários. Kate me ganhou logo nos primeiros 20 minutos e a história um pouco previsível no final não estraga em nada o que foi entregado.

Starts off feeling a little derivative but it definitely improves with each episode. Kate Winslet is great, the pacing is solid, and the show offers some pretty good suspense.

What I liked most about this show was that it was so real. Real-looking people with real emotions, real actions, real relationships. Great actors, good soundtrack, and intriguing plot through all seven episodes.

It's a bog-standard murder mystery with above-average character writing and performances. There is a ton of fluff, and this is definitely a story that could have been told in three episodes rather than seven, possibly even within a feature-film runtime. The original score feels completely out of place every time it pipes in. Reminiscent of many other detective mystery shows, most directly feeling like a less effective Broadchurch.

I was prepared to dislike this, yet...whoa. Such a thoroughly inhabited tapestry of bleakness I have never encountered before. Kate Winslet--indeed, the entire ensemble--is extraordinary. There's a lot of plot, but it's almost secondary to the utter humanity of...well, everyone, and it has the best-written dialogue I've heard in recent memory. But...Winslet. There is not an inflection, a flicker of an expression that is not totally believable. The only real flaw--and it's bad--is the music.

Solid crime mini-series featuring a flawed main character trying her hardest to solve a murder while trying to hold all three generations of her family together and dealing with a immensely traumatizing past. It is well written and the story is engaging throughout. Jean Smart and Kate Winslet really stand out in this limited series.

All the acting in this show is SUPERB. The writing is fine, a bit too convenient at times, or tries to throw you of a bit too much. But it is engaging through and through, and oh, the acting is superb. I love Kate’s mother :)

It's not groundbreaking in plot and characters, but it felt genuine somehow. Sure, there is some BS here and there, but you will ignore it whenever Mrs. Winslet is on screen.

Feels overlong at times and one plot turn had me rolling my eyes at the laziness of it, but superb performances (Winslet is wondrous here, and Nicholson comes on blazing in the finale, but almost everyone is close to their level, and most have their moment to shine), some wonderfully evocative observations of small-town life, rivalry, boredom and scandal, and some ingenious twists hold the attention throughout. I could have done without the tangential Pearce.

Probably the TV Limited Series of the year so far. Kate Winslet is a my #1 contender for Emmy and Golden Globe, she shines through the season. I also see the chances of Julianne Nicholson and Jean Smart very high. Nicholson, in particular, performed excellently in the last few episodes. It's impossible not to admire her. Pacing good, storytelling strong, as realistic as can be. yes, we see a surprising huge twist in the last episode, but there are also such things in real life. Thanks HBO.
