Helter Skelter

A fine performance from Davies makes this worthwhile, chillingly capturing Manson's seductive powers and how his "free love" philosophies conceal the madman within. The production overall represents a case of reach exceeding grasp - some of the side elements (especially Polanski/Tate) could support their own movie and feel rushed and skimpy here. At its best in the first hour showing the lead-up and aftermath of the murders, before becoming laboured and hackneyed during the courtroom scenes.

Didactic, caricaturistic and badly acted, this movie somehow manages to be rather boring, which is a considerable achievement given its subject.
