Okay so I liked this more than I probably should have. But darn it I couldn't help myself. Admitedly I haven't watched the old bbc series and I only watched 15 minutes of the movie (avoid that one). Much of the credit naturally goes to Austen, who, I'm afraid to admit, knows how to push the right buttons. But who really made this movie great was Romola Garai, who has really grown as an actress (especially compared to Atonement) - a pity she's in the same category as Claire Danes at the Globes.

Genial and pleasant Austen adaptation can’t best any of the movie versions (and feels a little stretched and padded at 4 episodes), but as a showcase for a charming Garai it remains consistently enjoyable; her Emma is a winsome and at times snarkly cynical one, and she is surrounded by a well-chosen cast, especially Gambon as her doddery father. Otherwise lives up to what you would expect from a circa-2000s BBC production, though struggles in the shadows of P&P.

Romola Garai is absolutely wonderful. She was beautiful, charming, interesting and entertaining. The supporting cast was also quite good. Even though the story has been made and remade, this adaptation is particularly well done and a joy to watch from start to finish thorough each of the 4 episodes. Despite knowing mostly what was coming around each corner, and it's long running time, it was quite entertaining and enjoyable.

Some dirty little part of me wants to be scolded by Mr. Knightley

This miniseries is well-acted, funny, and it improves on the book. It makes the character Emma loveable and makes you fall in love with Knightley. It's long at four hours but you will find yourself addicted and not wanting to ever end.

Only for those who can digest Jane Austen without any negative consequences. I haven't. Reason for such high score is only exceptional acting performace of all cast. Oh and by the way plot is predictable(from 1st minute), unimaginative and mawkish thus approved only for women and stupid romantics, others may watch on their own risk.
