Don't let the "school drama" put you off, this is THE best school based serial by many a mile (it helps that it is not a silly romance, NB have not seen GTO so can't compare.) Casting is perfect, even down to the teen students. Also it is very well written with a decent plot. I must admit I have a soft spot for Hiroshe Abe (not that he is allover perfect) and here he really shines. A definite watch! (Note there is a season 2 in 2021, it is only OK and not a patch on the 2005 season 1)
