Village life in the 1820s, whether in Germany or France, was much the same as it was in the Middle Ages. The peasantry was seen as a cash-cow for the landowning aristocracy, or for the government, according to circumstances. In this black-and-white German language film, the citizens of Kombach have been pushed beyond their limit, and they organize to steal back their tax money (and some more besides). (allmovie.com)

Ingenious in its simplicity, Schlöndorff and Von Trotta's film has an almost aloof, matter-of-factly historical style that evokes Rosi's "Salvatore Giuliano" and Jancso's 1919 trilogy, and one of the most warranted uses of voice-over narration I've seen. For its minimalism, it contains incredibly profound thoughts on the value of money, on wealth and poverty and class relations, and on the machinations of governmental and religious authority. Fassbinder cameos! Finger-licking good cinema.
