Having only seen some of the later, more recent shows, all I know is that by then, the writing is TERRIBLE. Endless, over-obvious chat about stuff that shouldn't have to be said at all. I feel sorry for the decent actors that populate the show.

I really loved the season 1, but it went down hill quickly. The show couldn't keep their leads, lost them all by season 2. By season 5 they really only had one story line: an obvious murderer with an alibi, figure out how the alibi was faked.
