Damages

The first season is fantastic. Pulpy, stylish, engaging and both well written and performed. In isolation it's excellent. After season one things slide fairly significantly. Although both seasons two and three maintain standards to a degree, the storytelling slips somewhat and the engagement and momentum of the first season is never regained. By the final two seasons it had lost me and became something of a chore.

Really engaging first season, but it should have been a miniseries that ended there. While the next couple seasons weren't terrible, it was clear that nobody had given a thought to anything after season one when it was created. Dramas writing themselves into a corner after one season isn't anything new, though.

A promising beginning never pans out and this slides into the realm of second tier shows to watch once you have burned through the good ones.
