Based on the true story of a Russian serial killer who, over many years, claimed victim to over 50 people. His victims were mostly under the age of 17. In what was then a communists state, the police investigations were hampered by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power. The story is told from the viewpoint of the detective in charge of the case. (imdb)

Doesn't try too hard, but in doing so, tells this story in a compact and relatable format that is basically a story of two of the only competent men in the Soviet Union coming to respect each other. I don't like Communism, but Andrei Chikatilo is a next-level horror.

it's really astonishing how dry a murder mystery could be.

Plus: Em todo caso a participação do Max Von Sydow, curta e potente, vale o filme. DVD Obras-primas do Cinema.

Criticker works superbly! I never knew Cit X existed & no way stumbled upon sans Crit PSIs. THANK U 2 site & my fellow users. Just what hoped 4 when joined :-) Cit X: Low $ 90s TV & goreless portrayal of actually vile grotesque mutilation kills. U DONT get WS fantasy; no lush MeloD of Hannibal, genius charming killer nor dark Fincher gloss. U get superb acting in TRUE adult story: Human(e) man nearly broken by stress & horror of hunting pathetic monster in crushing soulless system

Glaringly cheap prestige drama. The central point, that Soviet authorities' reluctance to admit their great nation had a serial killer hindered the investigation and cost many lives, is established immediately rather than led up to. Why bother with the perfunctory rest, then, when right off the bat you get the short and sweet version from Donald Sutherland himself?

Underrated tale on the true story of one of the most prolific serial killers in history. Rea is excellent. It's a slow burn but I was fascinated.

I enjoyed the tension of the "work within the system" boss (Sutherland) and his determined detective subordinate. Since a serial killer could not exist in Soviet Russia, the police were definitely hamstrung in what they could do to find the killer.

The great Donald Sutherland and Max von Sydow, as well as the potentially compelling true case of Andrei Chikatilo (one of the most prolific serial killers on criminological record), are wasted on a very average made-for-TV production. A tame, thrill-less thriller with mediocre text. Although said to be critical of the USSR's conduct in the case, Citizen X lavishes its protagonists with adulation and omits such crucial facts as the execution of an innocent suspect who confessed under torture.
