Herbert's dune is a complex thing to bring to movies, this does a good job, though ultimately it is a rather weak interpretation

The original Dune mini-series was better. Not because this is a poor adaption but because past the first Dune book I doubt anyone could possibly adapt it for any other medium. There is just far too much philosophy and psychology involved in the books than can ever be appropriately translated into a film or mini-series. With that said this does do a very impressive job of it and is certainly entertaining to a Dune or sci-fi fan.

Well, I think the first mini-series is a lot better for people who have read and loved the book... But this series is the opposite. Thankfully, they condensed Messiah into 1/3 of the the running time, and the silly hats were toned down quite a bit, but so much was unexplained, removed, or watered down in Children, that a lot of the best parts are ruined. There was a lot from the last half of the book that I looked forward to seeing on screen, but it was all turned so anti-climactic.

Pretty good if you're a fan of Herbert. As a movie itself, probably not going to be that great if you're not familiar with the novels.

Books aside, this one is marginally better overall than the 2000 production of Dune. As an adaptation, however, it still leaves a lot to be desired and I tend to be fairly forgiving where adaptations are concerned given the difficulty of translating very rich source material to a much more confined medium. That being said, neither of the miniseries has managed to relate the themes of religion, philosophy, and political intrigue sufficiently and remain surface level sci fi action stories.

The tone of the lynch movie works better, but this series isn't bad if you already have an interest in the source material

From someone who hasn't read these books but has no problem understanding the lore, this was generally a pretty entertaining mini series. The story has good flow and a little backstory for the viewers. The effects aren't too bad considering it's made for tv and the actors are good in there roles. Writing this now in 2017 makes me long for more material to view from the multitude of novels out there.

Actually wish I could unsee this. The changes they've made from the books are maddening. Leto's sandworm skin is fucking henna.

Only watch the first episode and then make up your own continuation, the other two episodes hurt the overall experience.

I am such, such, such a fan of the Dune books, but who the hell thinks that this miniseries is any good?

Yeah, I'm probably a book snob, but this is all kinds of wrong, story-wise.

Surprisingly faithful adaptation of books 2 and 3 in the Dune series. Remains far truer to the source material than the previous series and Lynch's version. Thankfully, the budgetary restraints of the first series were also resolved in this one. If you enjoy the Dune mythos, this is actually an excellent addition to the saga, and captures the feel and the spirit of the story and the characters. Fingers-crossed for a God-emperor miniseries.
