Beauty & the Briefcase

According to Criticker, the first Hilary Duff movie I've seen. If this is any indication, I fervently hope it's the last. Obviously, rom-coms are not bastions of realism, but this is so ridiculously unrealistic that I quickly became aware of just how often I was rolling my eyes. Duff here is an annoying, lying, overprivileged twat. Luckily, this flick is populated by hot guys. Michael McMillan seems to work mostly in television, but he could be a real star--he's beautiful and has real charm.

Dumb and cute and fun. And seriously hot. These skirts. Dat ass...

Very Sex and the City-esque - but not in a bad way. It even had the heroine writers philosophising narrations. Low key humour and plot that was pitch perfect.

Hillary Duff deserved most of the points for the movie...

Not bad, but not amazing. Hilary Duff can be a little tiresome. Lots of eye candy...predictable story line.

As a general rule, romantic comedies don't work if you hate the protagonist. She reminds me of Sarah Palin: little substance or smarts, thinks that working to get ahead and playing by the rules are for other people, portrays herself as some kind of underdog when actually she's as privileged as hell (it doesn't help that Duff is star and co-exec-producer) and would marry Charles Manson if he had plenty of money and cute abs.
