90 33% The Lives of Others (2006) - Rated 20 Jun 2008
"I am tempted to give this film a sub-par rating for its optimistic, sentimental finish. However, the film manages to remain true. It must be considered good! This was a fine example of incarnating a common human experience in a new story. Though I am unsure of the path we took to reach this resolution, I am wholly satisfied without feeling cheated. Above all, the film was able to exert its powers by taking an otherwise slow plot and breath life into it by establishing real characters."
80 0% The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) - Rated 20 Jun 2008
"Dreyer attempts to tell a story comply though the presence of the lens and the eyes of his characters. He fails in the first, for the audience is too aware of the work being done by the camera rather than lending quiet meaning to the films story. However, Dreyer overwhelmingly succeeds in the second. Though I feel the camera must recede, the film remains genius in that it tells a dramatic difficult story almost exclusively through the eyes. In all this, the story remains true."
95 50% Au revoir les enfants (1987) - Rated 26 May 2008
"Though I suspect AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS would seem slow to some, it does not lose a minute of its allure. The idea and stage in this film are both well suited for its patient narrative. It achieves what many of its kind attempt: It is able to portray the triumph of good despite its apparent defeat. The film works because the very presence of an audience places judgment and favor on the truth, goodness, and beauty laid bare. The film expands as a result! I only felt it held back a bit."
100 83% L'avventura (1960) - Rated 14 May 2008
"LAVVENTURA is a work of art! While the two principle characters look for a missing friend their search turns into a spiritual one. Eventually, emptiness reveals their true spiritual condition: Sandro is overtaken by a restlessness made apparent in his need for women and experience; but it is the seemingly weak Claudia who becomes priestly and strong. Antonioni masterfully creates a new experience for a common human problem... and he does this using the unique filmic powers of word and image."
95 50% Hiroshima mon amour (1959) - Rated 14 May 2008
"In HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR the lovers provide a vivid and meaningful departure for the audience. It is out of their allegorical relationship that we consider the horror of forgetting. She has forgotten her past love while we have forgotten Hiroshima... the former serves as a catalyst for the latter. No other subject seems to be worthy of overlapping with the tragedy of Hiroshima in order to bring it back to life. I felt his vision was pure though slightly burdened with its didacticism."
85 16% Stranger Than Paradise (1984) - Rated 14 May 2008
"STRANGER THAN PARADISE was an hour and ten minutes of pure genius but fell apart in the last twenty minutes. Though beautifully ironic, the conclusion was gained only by abandoning its distinct style, message, and charm. Jarmusch enthralled us by simply placing a camera in front of the idle, idiosyncratic, city-bound Willie--but, he ultimately failed to obey the story. Despite this, however, we are indebted to Jarmusch for his episodic depiction of strange beauty that disrupts banality."
