20 9% Flamin' Hot (2023) - Rated 08 Jun 2023
"Longoria doesn't doubt Montañez's story, acknowledging his storytelling skills, giving power to the voiceover. Flamin' Hot sincerely champions a Mexican-American underdog who defied poverty and racism to succeed. However, it's disheartening that Montañez's value is affirmed by a CEO looking to sell more snacks. This shouldn't be celebrated as a great moment in Mexican-American history. Let's create better legends."
40 79% Past Lives (2023) - Rated 08 Jun 2023
"At once clear-eyed and swooningly romantic, Past Lives is all the more effective for the contradictions it does nothing to resolve, inching toward a bittersweet recognition that the satisfactions and happiness of the life we’ve chosen has to compete with the bittersweet possibilities of the life that might have been."
25 21% The Boogeyman (2023) - Rated 01 Jun 2023
""The Boogeyman "disappointingly recycles horror tropes, rendering it generic and easily forgettable. Despite an appealing attempt to create suspense and fear around the classic 'monster in the closet' concept, it lacks the originality to make it memorable. Savage's direction results in a few modest scares, with the standout moment being David Dastmalchian's compelling performance. However, the themes of trauma and grief, as well as the creature design, feel uninspired and unoriginal."
40 79% Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) - Rated 01 Jun 2023
"This movie is a daring sequel, vaulting past the heights of its predecessor with an ambitious mix of parallel universes and an array of Spider-folk. It feels more like a thrilling rollercoaster ride with its dizzying, ever-shifting animation style that may leave you catching your breath but undoubtedly thrilled. Emotionally, it's a deep dive into the struggles of Gwen, Miles, and Peter while balancing the thrill of a multiverse crisis."
41 90% Ugetsu (1953) - Rated 30 May 2023
"Balancing the elements of storytelling, cinematography, and humanism, "Ugetsu" shines as an unforgettable film. While the pacing may be off at times and certain plotlines may be underdeveloped, the film's artistic prowess, thoughtful storytelling, and the emotional journey it takes its audience on are commendable. It's a deeply moving piece of cinema that successfully captures the harsh realities of life during wartime."
20 9% About My Father (2023) - Rated 25 May 2023
""About My Father" finds Sebastian Maniscalco transplanting his stand-up persona into a predictable culture-clash comedy film that largely underwhelms. Despite commendable efforts from veterans like Robert De Niro and Kim Cattrall, the narrative is hamstrung by stale material and outmoded cultural references. The blend of exaggerated humor and sentimentality feels less like a well-seasoned pasta dinner and more like a dish of bland egg noodles and ketchup."
15 1% The Little Mermaid (2023) - Rated 25 May 2023
"Why? Why does this movie exist? What is interesting about converting an animated film into a live-action film that’s primarily motivated by replication rather than revision? Because so much of The Little Mermaid takes place underwater, the conversion gets even stranger: Why turn a hand-drawn animated film, a medium where anything is possible, into a CGI-animated film in which there are serious limitations? The Little Mermaid (or the live-action Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin): should not exist."
30 33% Master Gardener (2023) - Rated 19 May 2023
"Schrader’s willingness to confront the audience with uncomfortable questions remains exciting, and lends a natural tension to Master Gardener. Yet despite Edgerton’s deep, haunted performance in the lead role, there’s a sense of diminishing returns after First Reformed and The Card Counter, like he’s telling a slightly worse version of the same story."
30 33% Fast X (2023) - Rated 19 May 2023
"Fast & Furious lost any sense of gravitas a few films back and Fast X is pure, self-indulgent silliness. If its commercial, and cultural peak was its imperial phase, Fast X is the peak of its Caligula era, a film driven by decadent whims, florid gestures, excess, and insanity. But if you’ve enjoyed any past entries, and if that sounds at all appealing rather than a reason to retreat to other corners of the cinematic world, may as well hop on for the first lap of this, allegedly, final ride."
35 54% The Starling Girl (2023) - Rated 13 May 2023
""Starling Girl" adeptly balances a complex story. It portrays Jem's affair with older Owen as driven by her unfulfilled desires. Parmet's direction heightens unease as the affair intensifies, creating scenes as chilling as any horror film. Yet, it's Scanlen's phenomenal performance that truly shines, silently communicating Jem's growing doubt and spiritual evolution, driving her towards risky steps, possibly into an abyss."
