Bio: Some people's rating seem to aspire to a high degree of objectivity, not considering their own subjective level of enjoyment. I used to be such a person, but am trying to move away from that since I think most ratings are subjective and I'm likely to generate better recommendations that way (note: objectivity-seekers may be interested in Piero Scaruffi's lists of the best films, music & art). As such, my ratings should not necessarily be interpreted as a "grade". I'm not a film student, so usually I'm not necessarily looking for films that are perfectly crafted, I'm just looking for something I'll enjoy -- sometimes these things are the same, but not always (for example, The Room is a steaming pile of garbage, but it's frequently quite unintentionally funny; I got some small level of enjoyment from it at times and my rating reflects that).
My ratings are split into 10 tiers (each with 4 sub-tiers [for the most part, ]) as follows:
+5 awesome (99, 96, 94 & 91)
+4 great (89, 86, 84 & 81)
+3 good (79, 76, 74 & 71)
+2 fair (69, 66, 64 & 61)
+1 above average (59, 56, 54 & 51)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
-1 below average (49, 46, 44 & 41)
-2 poor (39, 36, 34 & 31)
-3 bad (29, 26, 24 & 21)
-4 shite (19, 16, 14 & 11)
-5 awful (09, 06, 04 & 01)
This account is also an experiment (one I now perceive to be successful) in generating more useful TCI's that provide more accurate PSI's as I believe Criticker's methodology is flawed (feel free to message me for an explanation). To ensure I always have an equal number of films rated with scores in the 90s, 80s, etc. and with limited exception (so far, about a dozen films: Witness For The Prosecution, We Are The Best, War for the Planet of the Apes, Still Alice, Spy, The Ridiculous 6, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, My Dinner With Andre, A Most Wanted Man, The Little Prince, Kung Fu Hustle, Infinitely Polar Bear, The Guest, Frank, Don't Breathe, Clouds Of Sils Maria, and Captain Fantastic) the scores from me ending in 0 (i.e. 30, 50, 80, etc.) are "fake", which is to say that I haven't seen those films so my rating shouldn't be interpreted as a (dis)recommendation (no one else had rated them, so influence on the absolute number of films I have in common with other users for TCI-generation purposes is nil). Note that this also means the "Least Favorite Films" link below ends up simply displaying things that I and others haven't seen that I've arbitrarily decided to give a filler-rating of 0.
