Bio: I'm looking to find better movies to watch (it's difficult to find people with good taste these days.). Foreign films specifically, but I'll take American film recommendations if you have them, too.

"This movie was a trainwreck. It was awkward and a little bit creepy. Though the idea is supposed to be romantic, I found it to be incredibly odd and uncomfortable."
90 83% Rashomon (1950) - Rated 01 Jun 2008
"What a great movie. Some of acting and swordfighting seems a little fake nowadays, but those are some of the few flaws I could find in it. The movie, although somewhat slow-moving in its flashbacks, kept me engrossed from start to finish. My head was full of theories and musings after I had finished watching it. The cinematography was also rather beautiful; Kurosawa knew how to use black and white effectively. Fine performances all around, but Mifune's crazed eccentricity was brilliant."
90 83% Solaris (2002) - Rated 01 Jun 2008
"People like to pick on this one for not being as ambitious as Tarkovsky's, but I like to look at the two as separate movies stemming from a similar concept. This Solaris happens to be a lot more personal than Tarkovsky's, and, while it wouldn't work for his, it did here. The soft music and the lovely visuals make this a visually lush movie, and Natascha McElhone and George Clooney give good performances. It qualifies as both a good Sci-Fi movie and a good romantic one, and I like it for that."
90 83% Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) - Rated 01 Jun 2008
"This is hardly a perfect movie, but yet, everything about it just seems so right. This movie is the one that both introduced me to Woody Allen and the Drama genre in general, so I'm a bit biased toward it, but it really is a great movie. Woody Allen's skill with dialogue impresses me every time, and his characters here are so sharply drawn. It's one of the few movies I can just watch over and over again and not get bored of."
100 96% The Shining (1980) - Rated 26 May 2008
"One of my favorite Horror movies, if not my favorite. The only slight flaw is the threadbare characterization of its characters, but even that doesn't detract from its excellence. Jack Nicholson delivers a defining performance set to wondrous cinematography and a spine-chilling soundtrack. Surprisingly absorbing despite its lengthy running time; I can rewatch it over and over without being bored by it. The Horror movie to which all others should be measured."
75 42% Life Is Beautiful (1997) - Rated 25 May 2008
75 42% Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Rated 07 May 2008
"I much prefer The Last Crusade to Raiders, but this is a perfectly good opening to the Indiana Jones series. Somebody mentioned how this is the only one of the three where Indiana Jones is actually not a straightforward hero, where he makes some morally dubious decisions. The ambiguity is welcome, and the movie in general just has a childlike thrill to it that makes it nostalgic to watch it, even if you didn't actually grow up on it."
85 66% Koyaanisqatsi (1982) - Rated 07 May 2008
"For a movie with no plot, character, dialogue, or anything of the sort, Koyaanisqatsi is a very entertaining movie. The cinematography sweeps you away soon into the movie, and the music is excellent. It's a very unique sort of movie, and I recommend it to anyone who can stomach such an avant-garde movie."
85 66% Shaun of the Dead (2004) - Rated 06 May 2008
"One of my all-time favorite comedies. Hilarious from start to finish, and surprisingly touching in bits. The zombies are mostly used for comedy, but there are certain scenes that have a hint of malice to them. This is one of the few movies I could watch multiple times a month and not get tired of, because every joke is well-written and not intended for cheap laughs. You're missing out if you haven't seen it already, but if you haven't, I recommend it."
75 42% Fight Club (1999) - Rated 06 May 2008
"This movie is given a lot more philosophy than it actually contains. Admittedly, it's headier than most movies and it does have some good points, but it's not as smart as its devout fans would have you believe. It's a relatively good movie, though. Fincher knows how to make a movie visually stylish, and its sense of humor is considerable. Not an instant classic, but worth at least one viewing by any decent film fan."
