100 96% The English Patient (1996) - Rated 19 Apr 2009
"Epic drama about passion, love, obsession, and so much more. Definitely in my top-ten movies of all time. Get the tissue paper ready for this one."
83 51% Elegy (2008) - Rated 19 Apr 2009
"Somewhat short of being a great film. The actors and performances are all very good here, and the movie does a relatively good job of touching upon some timeless themes - aging and dying, romantic love in its many aspects (passion, companionship, betrayal). I'd say its worth watching, but don't expect to be completely captivated."
88 76% Milk (2008) - Rated 15 Apr 2009
"Great movie about the power of an individual to influence the world and bring about change. Sean Penn does a fabulous job. Hated his spanish lover though - the guy was as annoying as could be imagined. If there's anything bad to say about this movie, it's the fact that it portrays Milk's sex life as being pretty promiscuous, which seemed unnecessary. The movie also struck me as somewhat sympathetic to Dan White, as if he were the victim of bullying rather than the bully himself."
82 46% Ghost in the Shell (1995) - Rated 15 Apr 2009
"Pretty decent anime film. It makes a good attempt at a deeper, more philosophical undertone (though I think it ultimately fails). That said, the animation is pretty good in this one. Worth seeing if you're an anime fan."
85 60% Macross Plus (1994) - Rated 15 Apr 2009
"If you're a fan of anime (especially the Robotech series and its offspring) this is a must see. The story line is just ok, but the animation is where this film shines."
100 96% The Civil War (1990) - Rated 15 Apr 2009
"Can't praise this documentary enough. I'm a civil war buff to begin with, and the haunting melodies and multiple narrators give this documentary a distinct and impressive flavor. David McCullough is the primary narrator, and does a fabulous job. On top of that, you have one of the pivotal events that shaped America into the nation it is today."
75 31% Seven Pounds (2008) - Rated 15 Apr 2009
"This looked like it was going to be a fantastic movie, and clearly had the potential to be one. Somewhere in the execution it lost its footing though, and fell flat on its face. There are several poignant moments that will bring out tears from any but the most callous of individuals. The truly sad thing is that the movie fails to bring everything together at the end, leaving the viewer unsatisfied."
65 17% Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) - Rated 14 Apr 2009
"This appeared at first to be an interesting film, but I was left wanting at the end. Woody Allen's apparent theme in the movie is that trying to be satisfied in relationships and in love is impossible, as demonstrated by the ultimate unhappiness of each character. That said, Javier Bardem was very good in the movie, as was Penelope Cruz. The movie would have been better had it centered around them. Vicky's character was also very sympathetic."
75 31% Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) - Rated 14 Nov 2007
"Pretty good flick, with nice action and plenty of light-hearted humor. I was waiting the whole film for a shot of Galactus, but you can't have everything."
40 4% American Psycho (2000) - Rated 14 Nov 2007
"Just didn't enjoy this very much. Probably the most frustrating aspect of the movie is the uncertainty with which it leaves you at the end. What really happened? Other than that, the movie was overly melodramatic in many places, and just didn't seem to have a consistent theme/storyline running throughout. A better title would have been, "A Series of Vignettes Detailing the Shallow and Deluded Life of a Second-Hander"."
