70 42% City 40 (2016) - Rated 24 Nov 2016
"Not as high-tech as some documentaries, but I enjoyed it all the more for that. It was interesting how they showed the surface appearance of life in Ozersk, and that maybe, despite the lack of freedom, Kutepova might be working to destroy something beautiful. And then, no, they show that she's completely justified in what she's doing."
75 55% The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) - Rated 20 Nov 2016
"The film failed, to some degree, to capture Ramanujan's brilliance, or the difficulty of overcoming his background to get to Cambridge. Also, there was a hint at the beginning that there was some romantic interest from Hardy towards Ramanujan, presumably unrequited, but this was pretty much ignored through the film. That said, I did enjoy this film, and it was a welcome insight into a figure I knew little about previously. I did also find it somewhat touching, in a distant sort of way."
50 13% Dhanak (2015) - Rated 14 Nov 2016
"It was a sweet enough story, I suppose, and it was interesting having a (rather watered-down, I suspect) glimpse into Indian and Rajasthani culture. But the various encounters that the young children had in their adventure seemed designed to pad out the movie while simultaneously moving them closer to their destination. The deus ex machina at the end seemed very tacked on, though I guess it was probably planned from the beginning."
75 55% Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) - Rated 10 Aug 2016
"I probably enjoyed this more than I should have, just because it was about vampires, and has that nostalgia factor. Tom Cruise is actually tolerable for a change."
80 72% Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - Rated 25 Jul 2016
"As has been said, plenty of recycled material here. Still fun, and it's great having a female protagonist. Hopefully the female villain (Phasma), will be used to greater effect in future instalments."
40 6% Hotel Transylvania (2012) - Rated 20 Mar 2015
"The jokes are infantile, and the characters are dreary. The animation is decent, I guess."
50 13% Paper Planes (2014) - Rated 13 Mar 2015
"Falls flat due to a complete reliance on trite stereotypes. Occasionally slightly touching."
0% I Give It a Year (2013) - Rated 25 Nov 2014
"I could not even finish this. Awful, awful, awful."
85 86% Last Life in the Universe (2003) - Rated 20 Nov 2014
"Interesting and dreamy exploration of Kenji-san's strange mind."
75 55% Forbidden Planet (1956) - Rated 11 Dec 2013
"Fairly standard social commentary from 50s and 60s SF, but the SF ideas were pretty fresh for the time, and the effects likely would have looked amazing."
