90 86% The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"A classic Bill Murray movie, it's a story about a clueless man who manages to bumble his way into outwitting one obstacle after another. Murray nails the humor in a way that only he does best. There are laughs throughout and its rewatchability makes it a tour de force in comedic excellence."
80 54% Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"A far superior upgrade to Volume 2, the third movie in the GoG franchise recaptures some of the best parts of Guardians. It leans into the tragedy of this characters and their damages more than the other films but not in a bad way. It's less funny than the first one and some of the attempted humor takes away from the quality of the final product. But it is still a worthy entry conclusion to Star Lord and Rocket's journey."
92 90% (500) Days of Summer (2009) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"An unexpectedly profound "romantic comedy," 500 Days of Summer captures the high and lows of love and relationships in an unusually artistic but profound way. The performances throughout are also fantastic! Its unique approach and unflinching story make it one of the most accurate journey through the highs and lows of dating and relationships and will likely leave everyone in the audience with something they can take away from it by the time the credits roll."
90 86% Friday Night Lights (2004) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"A unique movie about life and our occasional struggle against futility and the meaning we make out of that struggle, Friday Night Lights isn't quite your traditional sports movie. The blunt realness of the story makes it stick with you and also makes its messages much more profound than most cliche outings of this genre. It's definitely worth a watch for sports fans and drama fans alike."
93 93% The Lion King (1994) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"An absolute classic coming of age movie, this movie was Disney at some of its finest. It had the right levels of hope, tragedy, despair, and happiness all mixed into a powerful story told by a fantastic voice acting cast. Memorable songs help round it out and take things to the next level, securing its place among the greatest Disney movies of all time."
95 95% Godzilla Minus One (2023) - Rated 29 Jan 2024
"A nearly perfect homage to everything good about Godzilla and what has come before, Minus One is a story told to near perfection. Unlike some Godzilla movies, they manage to near perfectly mix the destruction and action of the monster with the humanity of those fighting him. The soundtrack is the perfect level of classic music and epic moments. Minus One sadly does lose a level of its impact by compromising it slightly towards the end. But that one misstep only takes down a notch below perfect."
86 73% Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) - Rated 11 Nov 2023
"Some will take umbrage to this exposition heavy sequel, but it does a great job creating an interesting spy thriller that ties all its characters together and gives nods to past movies in this long running franchise. Tom Cruise continues to pull off death defying stunts and the cast manages to sell most of the scenes without much issue. There are some contrivance and some suspense of disbelief necessary. It hurts it some to end on a cliffhanger but it's a worthy successor to MI: Fallout."
88 79% The Creator (2023) - Rated 11 Nov 2023
"A live-action movie seemingly adapted from a famous anime or manga, the Creator is actually an original world and story. This is a refreshing change from the normal slate of Hollywood blockbusters and the acting talent in this movie, along with the top level CGI and visuals, help make the Creator a true big screen experience. While the movies' exploration of AI and the beauty and dangers of love are poignant, it's the performance of John Washington and the veteran cast that bring it all home."
94 94% Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) - Rated 11 Nov 2023
"It's not often that a sequel comes along and surpasses the original. It's even less often that a movie that leaves you on an obvious cliffhanger is very well accepted. But on both accounts, Across the Spider-verse succeeds with flying colors. Building on the original, it's a visual masterpiece that boasts one of the best soundtracks in recent memory. On top of all that, its clever but simple premise and the care that it takes in building deep and believable characters really makes it a must-see."
79 49% District 9 (2009) - Rated 11 Nov 2023
"Innovative in some ways and entertaining in others, the unnecessary vulgarity and clunky dialogue leaves something to be desired at times. For a lower budget movie, it mostly succeeds at its premise and provides a satisfying outing for those that can look past the language and enjoy the acting, action, and visuals."
