60 20% The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Bread and circuses, except the former is Wonderbread and the latter is just sad clowns."
15 2% Sleepover (2004) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"An uninteresting look at what Larson, Carell, Peters and Lynch were doing before they moved up in the world (they were playing supporting roles in a vanilla teen romp starring a Spy Kid)."
90 90% Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Honestly worth the price of admission so that Oscar Isaac could add fuel to the nerdy flames of desire that Harrison Ford first stoked in my youth."
90 90% Carol (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Mesmerizing, with an electricity that crackles under the surface. The aching and wanting is never given as a way to crush the characters under the machinery of a calculated melodrama, instead swelling to a satisfying conclusion that lingers with you. Also, you'll notice Carrie Brownstein's name in the opening credits and wait a long time to see her, at which point you will think "ok, sure, why not, there she is.""
80 62% The Danish Girl (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Beautiful to look at - great cinematography, costuming, and production design - and Vikander absolutely steals the show again. In fact, her performance is so strong that it saves the film for me: it's easier to sidestep its failings as a trans woman's story when I can instead view it as someone telling Gerda's story (admittedly a very cloying story about her career and her enduring and understanding love, but one that nevertheless left me a mess as the credits began)."
80 62% The Peanuts Movie (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"A nice security blanket to hold onto for a short while if you're familiar with the material, otherwise a fun introduction for new younger audiences."
50 12% The Good Dinosaur (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"The character designs are dull at best and everything feels written by committee - except for a couple of notably funny scenes where a much, much better (and weirder) film surfaces for a couple of minutes. This is Disney-Pixar, so it hits the tearjerking beats, but they're stop gaps between some surprisingly tedious adventures, and the real tears should be reserved for this tainting Pixar's otherwise triumphant 2015."
90 90% Inside Out (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Sounds like the kind of premise that either won't have legs or will have too many, but Inside Out is smart and concise and has a lot of fun with its concept. Top tier Pixar in that it rinses your emotions but gives you plenty of spectacle in return (and a neat takeaway box at the end for its lessons)."
80 62% Room (2015) - Rated 04 Feb 2016
"Could easily have descended into the realm of a malnourished family drama made for TV, but the strong cast keep everything afloat (Larson and Allen are standouts and Tremblay is wonderful). Better than its sense of claustrophobia is the plunging feeling of dread and elated feeling of survival it offers with freedom, often at the same time."
