73 30% | Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior (2003) - Rated 05 Nov 2021
"The plot is cheesy, but it's better than many films of this genre. The fighting is top-notch. Jaa's fighting style is amazing to watch. There's a chase scene through a crowded Bangkok market featuring a stunt series so unbelievable that it requires multiple viewings to fully recognize the stunt. It's a great brawler, for fans of choppy-socky movies. Not a fan? You probably won't enjoy it. It's breakout action flick for Thai martial arts."

78 37% | Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst (2004) - Rated 02 Nov 2021
"Accessibility problem. Don't know the case? Bone up first. Valuable watching concentrating on the bizarre group of people in the SLA (minus Hearst). Range of viewpoints. Insight into SLA motivations would have been better. Compelling footage. Flawed, but Stone realizes there is no way to get at the truth about the Hearst case. Best is offering multiple points of view. Riveting, intelligent, but a shame that it doesn't go further."

79 44% | Evil (2003) - Rated 02 Nov 2021
"Well, crap, I had to ponder for a while. Brings to mind words of Pastor Niemoller or Edmund Burke (go google for them). Characters, but for Erik (gritty pretty-boy bad-boy image & looks), are on the one dimensional side. Doesn't cover new ground. (boarding school, coming-of-age, violence, underdogs) But sets itself apart from the pack w/ Erik's balancing act between opposing ideas & good, suspenseful, plot development. Like & enjoyed."

"Uhmmm, "been there, laughed at that". Mockumentary? Check. Big event? Yep. Wacky, weird, wonderful characters? Yep, yep, yep. That new album by your favorite band just got their sound rearranged with nothing new to show for it. Still, there's some good laughs, witty interactions, and easy riffing. Shame this one never quite reaches the comedic high achieved by its predecessors. Best bit is Jane Lynch, a treat on the eyes."

53 8% | Marie-Jo et ses 2 amours (2002) - Rated 01 Nov 2021
"The direction is flat, pedestrian, but the dazzling blue Mediterranean sea flashes of something just out of reach. Some fine performances, Darroussin, (cuckolded husband). Ascaride is real, not airbrushed, just natural. Depth could have been added by digging into, despite what she claims, Marie-Jo loves neither man. The ending is one of stupendous stupidity, unbelievable, mawkish, & melodramatic, leaving viewer with a bad taste."

65 26% | Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001) - Rated 01 Nov 2021
"Good follow-up (or in-between) to the series. Watch after the series episode where meet Ed (better character understanding). Didn't like as much as the series but it's interesting. One major innovation is the film's visuals. Stunning & definitely an improvement. Musically? Tad disappointing. The ending theme "Gotta Knock a Little Harder" by The Seatbelts featuring Mai Yamane, is nicely done. Obviously, I like the series better (to be fair, watched series first.) Worth a watch."

"Quite thoroughly enjoyed this miniseries. Triumphant adaptation of a brilliant, detail-rich novel. Outstanding costumes. It's funny, romantic, sad, and sexy. Get a hold of the original uncut version (not the shitty one for American viewers.)"

83 74% | Dark Water (2002) - Rated 01 Nov 2021
"Fabulous performances by Kuroki & Kanno. Ominous images, elaborate framing, good rhythm. Maybe not as terrifying as some audiences would like, more than makes up for it with its compelling human drama. Not just creepy, but sad as well. Frankly, the very real fears (real-life stuff) are as nightmarish as the supernatural. One of the finest from J-horror. Compare to 2007 version? More psychological horror, USA more blood & jumps. I liked both. Tho, as a fan of j-horror, this is the "win"."

"A creepy, underrated film that deserves more notice. Connelly is tremendous as a struggling woman doing everything she can. Superb moments of pain, despair, & terror. I so wanted to give her a big hug. 8-yrs young Gade is wonderful. Speaking of characters, water is one of them. Absolutely dismal; rain, leaking ceiling, puddles. It's always raining, cloudy. Ever live somewhere with a rainy, endless winter? You'll get it."

80 56% | Gimme Shelter (1970) - Rated 01 Nov 2021
"The film looks great. It captures some great behind the scenes moments after the concert of the Stones reflecting on a deadly concert and does a good job capturing the madness of the concert. Don't go into the film expecting a lot of great performances and live concert scenes. It's the bad side of fandom and culture clashing. It's also a downer, as it shows where the country was headed."
