90 95% The Terminator (1984) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"The defining science fiction action movie. Smart, funny, moving, exciting -- never a wrong move. It's exactly what a movie like this should always be -- hammered down tight. It's one of those movies that you can watch and not think of a thing that they could have changed to make it any better."
75 59% Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"While not up to the power of the earlier Mad Max films, the third in the series has an undeserved bad reputation. Despite covering similar ground, it's still quite watchable and the movie's ending, moving toward the explicitly mythic, is strangely effecting."
60 29% Spaceballs (1987) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"After brilliant spoofs of westerns and universal horror, Mel Brooks takes on science fiction and especially Star Wars, spoofing a genre and material that, it's clear, he neither knows well nor has any particular affection for. The result is a dismal collision between Star Wars tropes and Mel Brooks "shtick" that falls flat far more often than it works."
67 38% Spider-Man 3 (2007) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"Least successful of the Spiderman movies. Proving once again that more often isn't better -- Peter Parker stops being Peter Parker, Mary Jane stops being Mary Jane, add three super villians and three hundred million dollars and a few hours later everything ends up just about where it started."
89 86% Let the Right One In (2008) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"One of the best horror films in recent memory. A great re-thinking of the vampire legend transformed both by setting and by character, it also uses the classic images and ideas of the vampire as a window into the real terrors, secret longing and rages of childhood that one almost never sees explored in a motion picture."
77 70% Frost/Nixon (2008) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"Highly watchable version of the stage play. Not brilliant but elevated by Frank Langella's great performance as Nixon."
70 45% Rachel Getting Married (2008) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"A handful of effective moments and some good performances can't rescue this otherwise dreary and self-consciously arty (and, it seems intentionally ugly-looking) outing."
40 9% Evolution (2001) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"This dreadful attempt by Ivan Reitman to recapture the tone of the Ghostbuster movies fails on every front. An utter disaster."
45 15% Flightplan (2005) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"A distraught woman airplane designer, just widowed is flying home with her young daughter and the body of her husband on the super jet airliner that she herself designed. In mid-flight, her young daughter vanishes -- and no one on the plane even remembers having seen her at all. This variation of a "locked room" mystery might have scored high -- if the so-called "solution" to the mystery had not turned out to be one of the most ludicrous things ever dreamed up. That alone earns the score."
75 59% Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) - Rated 01 Apr 2009
"One of the best of the Harry Potter series."
