"The most surprising thing about this movie for me is that, despite having a surreal, "artsy" premise, it still doesn't forgo traditional plot development and escalation, and the most well-known thing about it is probably NOT the weirdest thing. Still, it utilizes its absurdity to discuss very real, human themes, and explore them as they organically present themselves within facets of most of its characters. Every scene takes you somewhere new, and it's always worth it. Excellent film."

"A supremely unfunny, senseless, disjointed sequence of cringe humor that works better as a catalyst for depression and hopelessness in the art of cinema than anything resembling laughs. If I were any of the surprisingly big-name stars that show up in this drivel, I'd probably strike it from my resume and try to pass the existence of this film off as a case of mass hysteria."

80 56% | The Social Network (2010) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"The script is dense to the point of almost breaching the threshold of being convoluted, but the iron grip it keeps on its plot, pacing and dialogue makes it flow smoother and smoother as you tune your brain to its particular frequency. This is a great film, one where the raw storytelling shines. It feels like it could be easily adapted into a stage play, which makes a lot of sense coming from Aaron Sorkin. And honestly, by now this depiction of Zuckerberg is more sympathetic than the real one."

67 38% | Ready Player One (2018) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"There is a modicum of creativity here, and some of the stuff that was translated from the book was cleverly updated for its much less niche target audience, but it often veers into forgettable action setpieces without much passion or engagement, and the end especially is so cluttered, desperately trying to be epic without earning it, that it's truly difficult to care much for the movie as it goes on."

55 29% | The Current War (2017) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"A tepid movie. Characters often muse on with undue grandeur, trying to trick the viewer into feeling a complexity and majesty revolving around these characters that just isn't there as far as what the film is able to achieve. I don't care much for historical accuracy, and how much this film dramatizes real events doesn't matter, but in each end of this spectrum, there is a far better, more engaging or informative story that can be told with these building blocks."

94 93% | Coco (2017) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"A deeply touching, emotional animated movie that pays full respects to mexican culture in a truly awe-inspiring fashion that weaves itself into the deepest reaches of the plot. This is my favorite pixar film, and maybe the movie that most distressed me from a neutral state of them all. A true masterpiece of simple but ridiculously powerful storytelling."

95 97% | Chinatown (1974) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"A brilliantly written movie that utilizes its perfectly-setup plot, not wasting a single word of the script, to submerge the viewer into an uncompromising view of its setting. I must say, this film hits way, way harder upon first viewing it than it does in subsequent watches, as the element of surprise is one of its strongest allies, but nevertheless, this movie has a poignant core and used a near-perfect script to make it pierce through the deepest part of my brain and stuck it there forever."

82 68% | Mission: Impossible III (2006) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"The best mission impossible flick. It leverages whatever the previous films have built and injects the series with a much-needed dose of emotional investment. But the greatest thing about it is that, save for the setpieces that are obsured by shaky-cam or just COMPLETELY ABSENT, it does a fantastic job of keeping everything as creative and varied as possible. The bridge shootout is still one of my favorite action scenes in the franchise."

27 11% | Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"Self-satisfied action shlock that sort of betrays the mission impossible thesis statement. The level of Tom Cruise masturbation in this one is particularly vile. Otherwise it's just a boring string of actiony setpieces that look cool but offer little creativity."

81 61% | Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) - Rated 17 Dec 2023
"Insanely creative and replete with lovable characters, this movie takes full advantage of this medium to create something that is a masterclass in style. Its plot is also good enough to provide an entertaining way to connect the style dots. This is a film that I feel people must watch for its super strong visual identity alone, it really sticks with you."
