75 46% Sin City (2005) - Rated 24 Jul 2016
"An admirable translation of the comic to the big screen, with the unfortunate effect of making the shortcomings of that original work more obvious. "Sin City" is stylized to the point of ridiculousness at times, and its stunning visuals and ultraviolence can feel gratuitous and empty. Nonetheless, some enjoyable performances by a very deep cast here, and the pulpy writing manages to be entertaining. Mischaracterizes noir with "grittiness," but that can still be a lot of fun."
69 26% Non-Stop (2014) - Rated 17 Jul 2016
"A dumb, dumb, dumb movie, but I loved it probably more than I should have. Some kind of inventive ideas here, and an airplane remains a cool setting for a movie even though it's no longer original. Get drunk with your pals and cheer loudly whenever Liam Neeson does something illegal. Actually a pretty good cast, minus the director's absolutely criminal waste of Lupita Nyong'o. Did I mention I really love Liam Neeson?"
91 99% Citizen Kane (1941) - Rated 17 Jul 2016
""Citizen Kane" isn't a perfect movie, but the fact that it still feels so engaging 75 years later speaks to just how much Orson Welles nailed it back in '41. This is a pitch-perfect movie, where every aspect of the film (script, acting, direction, sound, editing, cinematography, etc) builds on the film's common themes and enhances the experience of watching it. Lives up to the hype. Don't believe the haters."
89 94% John Wick (2014) - Rated 17 Jul 2016
"This is a movie featuring Keanu Reeves as a retired hitman out for revenge, so there was almost no way I would dislike "John Wick." Even so, it managed to surprise me. Best-in-class action sequences and fight choreography made me worry about my cardiovascular health. Surprisingly thematically consistent in its creation of an underground world of over-the-hill assassins, where everyone has history. Never tries to be more than a (very beautiful) B-movie action flick, which somehow elevates it."
69 26% The Imitation Game (2014) - Rated 17 Jul 2016
84 82% Sicario (2015) - Rated 26 Jun 2016
"Absolutely stunning visuals (Roger Deakins is the man) and sound design, carried by great performances across the board. Such a masterclass in creating simmering tension and anxiety that you're almost relieved when the violence finally breaks out. The gravity and complexity of the War on Drugs in Mexico is both Sicario's greatest asset and its biggest weakness."
