"Undermined by the sophomoric, preachy presentation of the issues it tackles, although that simplicity does make it a lot more graspable to a western viewer like me. Despite that it's a very well-told story, several of the performances are compelling (if histrionic), it has a keen understanding of its characters and environment, and it avoids a lot of the wrong turns it could have made. Also I think I prefer this Russian model of Joseph Gordon-Levitt."

"Can feel a little like an "issue movie" at times, but sidesteps the misery porn trap. Central relationship is one big cliché but well-acted. Sequences of genuine suspense, well-judged horror, and surprising pathos. Deliberate but smooth pacing the images glide over the story like a sheet of water over glass. Finds real poetry in the final act."
