20 7% The Ring Two (2005) - Rated 29 Nov 2024
"Really feels barely related to the first one (I mean, it is...but also is entirely different), and pretty nonsensical and bad in comparison."
60 63% The Ring (2002) - Rated 29 Nov 2024
"Holds up decently well, even if it's a little cheesy and straightforward by modern standards. Still has a pretty good plot for a horror movie, and a natural progression, with some creepy scenes."
85 88% Wicked (2024) - Rated 26 Nov 2024
"Having never seen the musical, I really enjoyed this. Good cinematography and set pieces, the acting and characters were great, and the songs were enjoyable and fitting. It was surprisingly funny, too. I'm not sure how much of the story is left or if they could've compressed the runtime, but I will say I was never bored, and the length didn't bother me. My maybe one mark would be how quickly Elphaba turned on the Wizard with what was going on with the animals, which was barely touched on."
25 11% Gladiator 2 (2024) - Rated 25 Nov 2024
"Tries to basically be a re-hash of the first, but is worse in every way, and even tarnishes the first, if taken as a whole. A lot of the writing is exceptionally bad, to where I was laughing at parts that I'm almost certain weren't meant to be funny. Unfortunate."
40 25% Bonhoeffer (2024) - Rated 25 Nov 2024
"Like the movie earlier this year about Harper Lee, movies based on history often just have me wondering what is true and what isn't, and ready to read or watch a more historical documentary or book. If that's the intention, then it's a success, but as a standalone movie, I'm not sure."
65 70% Doctor Sleep (2019) - Rated 23 Nov 2024
"I thought it was decently interesting, but a bit too slow, long-winded, and with a somewhat let-down of a finale. I did enjoy it for the most part though, it's pretty unique, and I wouldn't have expected a sequel so many years later to actually be well-done, so it surprised me in that way."
70 74% Transformers One (2024) - Rated 22 Nov 2024
"Better than I expected it to be, although if I had to knock it for anything, I feel like Megatron's transition into "I'm super evil now" felt a little rapid, especially him letting Prime fall down the pit, I feel like they didn't really show anything that would hint that he was capable of that. Also sometimes the constant jokes got a little grating (bumblebee, mostly) - though I thought most of the humor actually worked well, and I laughed pretty hard at a few parts."
90 93% Let Me In (2010) - Rated 21 Nov 2024
"Having not seen the original, I think this is exceptionally well-done. Despite being a vampire movie, it actually depicts bullying (and how it can be passed on) and loneliness / isolation and how people can attach to one another in a really well-thought-out way. I also think the acting was great, as well as the cinematography and use of sound. Really enjoyed it."
40 25% Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) - Rated 21 Nov 2024
"I definitely thought this one lost a step, when compared to the first. Most of the interesting parts of the Further became replaced with more of a standard "uncover the mystery of the ghost" type of horror, with a crew doing an entire side-quest investigation while the main plot just kind of plods along. And trying to shoehorn in the scenes to "explain" parts of the first movie really didn't feel necessary."
60 63% Insidious (2010) - Rated 21 Nov 2024
"I thought it was unique and decently done, if not a little silly at times. I enjoyed all the aspects of "The Further" and the kid being lost there. The main bad guy probably would've been better left a little less-shown, or his appearance changed a bit when he was (what happened to the face with fire the kid was describing? did he just mean red?) and the comedy was hit and miss. Overall though, I thought it was entertaining and different enough from standard horror to be worthwhile."
