21 1% Geostorm (2017) - Rated 04 Feb 2018
"It's as if first time director Dean Devlin hurled a crate full of outtakes from Deep Impact, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 into a tornado and filmed the shit storm. He's certainly studied the Disaster Films 101 handbook inside out: important people look intensely at monitors, droves of civilians run from [insert CGI natural disaster here], while action-man scientist Gerard Butler tries to save the world from space. But you'll be as bored as Ed Harris and Andy Garcia. An epic disaster."
83 71% The Revenant (2015) - Rated 29 Jan 2018
"Most notable for Leonardo DiCaprio's jaw-dropping bear fight, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant is as beautiful as it is savage due largely to Emmanuel Lubezki's stunning cinematography. As a near-dead Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) agonisingly crawls, limps and rides his way through the harsh American winter wilderness to avenge his son's death, Iñárritu's fully immersive story and masterful direction challenges the viewer to endure Glass's harrowing plight to the cold and bitter end."
24 3% Street Fighter (1994) - Rated 24 Jan 2018
"At the peak of '90s arcade video gaming, Street Fighter II chewed up more pocket money than its rivals combined. When Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and co. predictably made the jump from local pizza parlour to the big screen, teenagers worldwide were left short-changed. Street Fighter's ultra dull story pitted super villain M. Bison, played with pantomime gusto by Raul Julia, against all-American good guy Guile, played straight by heavily-accented Belgian hero JVCD, with unintentionally laughable results."
59 9% The Commuter (2018) - Rated 24 Jan 2018
"Not as clever as it thinks it is or as thrilling as it wants to be, The Commuter (aka Taken Lite) simply comes and goes like a common locomotive. While there will always be an audience for such popcorn fare, this seems like an opportunity missed as a visibly weary Liam Neeson spends much of his ill-fated commute trying to avoid conflict rather than welcome it with clenched fists. Looking every bit his 65 years, it might be time for the once spritely Neeson to hand in his reluctant-hero badge."
64 16% Happy Death Day (2017) - Rated 23 Jan 2018
"Happy Death Day is the answer to the question nobody asked: what would happen if you crossed Scream with Groundhog Day? Surprisingly, the result is a spirited college slasher with a lively mix of jump scares, knife play and whodunnit guesswork. Its Final Destination inspired kill scenes, comedic tonal shifts and self-referential Bill Murray meta moment simply add to the fun. By no means a classic, but still a welcome addition to a genre that has been dying for a fresh coat of blood."
64 16% Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child (2016) - Rated 11 Jan 2018
"Third time is most certainly a charm for ambitious indie director Shane Abbess. A local genre film replete with American accents has no right being this entertaining, but Abbess, a convincing cast and a truly resourceful CGI team pull it off. Pacing issues and hokey Dark Crystal-inspired creature FX aside, The Osiris Child is clearly a passion project that can stand proudly aside its bigger-budgeted space brothers. An unlikely, unexpected gem for genre junkies and Australian cinemaphiles alike."
45 6% Café Society (2016) - Rated 06 Mar 2017
"Once the king of NY celluloid, Allen phones in this east meets west misfire. Set in the 1930s the mostly dull story masquerades as something more interesting, while its two-dimensional protagonists are overwhelmed by the weight of his valium-induced narration, not to mention their own boredom. Eisenberg's predictable impersonation fails to recapture past Woody glories, Stewart plays her usual sleep depraved self under girlie garb, while Carrell is strangely restrained as a bigshot sugar daddy."
