Jimmy Suede
Bio: A guy who likes movies of all kinds (well, except for the kind of movies I don't like), from all decades. Still working my way through the '1001 Movies to See Before You Die' list, and probably will always be.
Note, all my rankings of 0 (zero) are movies I have NOT seen, but am absolutely positive would fall in my lowest tier. The way Criticker assigns tiers I am forced to work the system in a losing effort to have decent movies be assigned to a decent tier. No reasonable person would watch as many bad movies as good ones.

"Pretty well done, despite the entire film hinging on an intelligent and unflappable woman's brainless decision to cover up a killing, which was at worst both accidental and in self-defense. James Mason's motivations are unrealistic, given someone in his line of work, or at least required more development. Yet the relationship still somehow works and the movie is engaging."

"Tragedy that results from poor and selfish decision-making is hit or miss. It needs to explore personal responsibility rather than wallow in victimhood. This film does it reasonably well, and adds a look at responsibility in intention vs action at the end. The film is good enough to invoke sympathy for what could have been, if Clift's character weren't an irresponsible sleaze. Good performances around."

50 17% | Gilda (1946) - Rated 27 Jan 2021
"This is a recognizably well-made noir flick, but I can't see how someone could actually enjoy it unless they like awful people. Gilda does awful things and makes awful choices, and Hayworth delivers it really well. She's repulsive. Ford does well, too, but his character isn't much easier to get behind. Also, I don't buy the "thin line between love and hate" thing. If you love someone you're going to do your best not to be awful to them."

90 93% | The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) - Rated 26 Jan 2021
"It was extremely difficult for me to watch a man (played brilliantly by Sinatra) beset by toxic friends and toxic circumstances being overcome by addiction. The resolution might seem overly optimistic, but I so needed it to be so. It's a pointed reminder that there are challenges too great to overcome alone. Let's invest in our brothers and sisters, not drag them down. Good movie."

85 85% | The Defiant Ones (1958) - Rated 26 Jan 2021
"Good social commentary/allegory, this film got its point across without being as barbed and ugly as many modern movies. The symbolism of men of two different races chained and forced to work together is still very relevant in these days of extreme division and blame-casting. This includes, but also transcends, race relations."
