95 66% Aliens (1986) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"When I was a kid, I thought Alien was all right, but I loved the sequel, Aliens. I know better now, though I still readily admit that Aliens is fucking bad-ass. It has the same structure of the first film, but everything is roided-up and amplified to the power of ten. It has space marines, an android that does this cool trick with a knife, Paul Reiser as a weaselly yuppie, and of course, lots of motherfucking aliens. The first movie is still the best, but Aliens is about as good as sequels get."
85 16% Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"Tetsuon is a difficult movie to write about, mainly because I have no idea what the fuck is going on most of the time. That's not always a bad thing. Tetsuo is what would happen if a David Lynch movie fucked a David Cronenberg movie with an industrial soundtrack playing in the background to, I don't know, lighten the mood. It's dream-like and grotesque, and sometimes it's pretty damn funny. I don't know if it's supposed to be funny but I laughed anyway."
90 50% eXistenZ (1999) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"eXistenZ came out the same year as The Matrix and the two films get compared to each other quite a bit. I love The Matrix but I have a soft spot for eXistenZ, which is kind of like it's nerdy little brother. It has a funky energy and a momentum that keeps you guessing right up until the last scene. Like most Cronenberg movies, it's obsessed with human anatomy and modern technology, and explores the different ways that these two fetishes intersect. It's sexy and gross and that's why I like it."
95 66% Donnie Darko (2001) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"I've seen Donnie Darko more times than I can count. It had been a while since I had seen it, but watching it again recently, I was struck by how much I still like it. It's funny and smart, and it's characters are uniformly likable. The sci-fi aspects have slways seemed a little hazy, but I think it mostly holds up. Also, anyone that tells you the Director's Cut is better doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about."
85 16% Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a flick that most people, even Star Trek fans, don't like. I think it's actually one of the better films in the series, and the one that's most like the original show. Robert Wise's direction is somber and more philosophical than the TV series, but that's part of what gives it its scope end epic feel. There would be better, more popular films to come, but Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a solid entry in a somewhat shaky franchise."
30 0% The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) - Rated 30 Jul 2009
"Pitch Black was no masterpiece but it had its moments. Its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, alternates between incomprehensive and laughably stupid. It's warmed over fantasy and reheated space opera for the mook generation. Vin Diesel's mouth-breathing protagonist stumbles from one big action scene to the next, but there's no purpose to any of it, no art. Its biggest offense is that it's boring. Also, Judi Dench? Really?"
