"So well written . . . . Good score, too. I never would have imagined that one of the all-time great cinematic rapturous love sprints would be performed by real-life harpy Shirley MacLaine, but turns out she played a young woman well. Jack Lemmon put in a sterling performance in this (and he didn't sour with age). This movie is a fascinating time piece and holds up well, deserving its several Academy Awards."

"The most putang-getting septuagenarian in the history of cinema is back with his trademark pencil-neck and warbly voice, as a grimly brooding Jimmy Stewart presages future generations of weird, emotionally fragile San Franciscans humorlessly chasing their own mental demons for public display. Extremely melodramatic movie, very stylized (people do not act this way in real life), confusing plot. Perfect movie to play in the background at a "cool" bar."

"Not a theme I remember having seen much of-- the aging underachiever at a fork in his life's road. That serious theme is overlaid upon lots of light beach action that is made the more interesting for being so very dated in style and attitude. Decently written and scored. Sam Elliott is not-- I repeat-- is NOT a cowboy in this movie, and that fact alone is a novelty. The movie poster showed on this page is not true to the tone of the movie. The movie is more substantive than the poster suggests."

"The pervasive use of weepy flashback interrupts the story's flow. The central premise (the main character's oracular abilities) overburdens the audience's suspension of disbelief since that plot element is incorporated into the already fantastical notion of space aliens. The story structure is a low, angst ridden ramp concluded with a rushed, complicated explanation. In sum-- story structure problems and too much soggy, weepy sentimentality, infused with a healthy heaping of leftism."

"This one had potential but just goes off the rails. Bad script, fatally flawed when . . . [redacted for spoiler purposes]. The movie veers into silliness and it kills the mood as jarringly as a fart during one's wedding vows."
