Bio: I suppose that it's been a long enough time that I should be updating my Criticker account to show my change in taste.
I'm a huge horror movie nut, but I'm willing to watch just about anything (I'll admit I have a special connection with horror, sci fi, and comedies). I base my movies on what I hope to be a fair mix of objective quality and personal enjoyment, though for some films, I definitely let one take over the other. Don't be surprised if a shlocky 80's flick outweighs an Oscar winner.
While looking at factors like acting, direction, cinematography, and plain entertainment value, I rate my films on a scale of 100, by 5's. Here's my best explanation for my ratings
100 - I haven't ranked one of these, yet, because I still don't think I've found the perfect movie.
95-90: Personal favorites and technical achievements. I love these movies and will maintain my strong opinions about them.
85-80: Most of these films I'll rewatch at the drop of a hat. The word I'll usually use for these movies is great, spanning from oscar winners to my favorite scary movies.
75-70: Totally valid entertainment. Sometimes a lot of these movies could just as easily fit a step up or a step below but for personal preference, it felt right to put them here. The "Good movies."
65-50: This is the "average" zone. Usually if a movie gets placed here it didn't make a big enough splash in my mind to warrant any higher or lower, still a 65, is more impressive than a 50.
45-30: Bad flicks. I don't avoid these like the plague like a lot of reviewers, and sometimes I seek them out, but sometimes there's just no other place to put a movie.
25-15: A scary place for a movie to be, indeed.
10-5: The worst of the worst. The truly terrible films that grace the planet every year. Honestly, I don't end up watching a lot of movies that will end up here, but every now and then I slip up.
0: My favorite ranking. Movies don't often end up here. This is the terrible movie that I love too much to be left to rot with the others. The rare gems in the dirt of bad cinema. The best kind of films.
I hope you enjoy my rankings!

85 82% | I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) - Rated 11 Sep 2020
"This is a big win for me. I haven't been this unnerved by a movie since Hereditary last year. It's absolutely anxiety-inducing, in the most lovely way. The cast carries this movie almost as much as Kaufman itself. It's a lot, and I likely won't be watching it for a little while, but I greatly enjoyed it. Lovely end scene."

"Going off the reputation of the filmmaker, I'm sure you'll be surprised that this score was so high."

"Ok, but what do you want me to say?"

5 1% | Battlefield Earth (2000) - Rated 11 Sep 2020
"Battlefield Earth is pretty devoid of anything that might make an actual movie watchable. I got a little enjoyment out of John Travlta, but this movie felt more like a bunch of B-movie sci-fi traits thrown at a wall, and watching nothing stick. It's like watching all the stuff slide to the bottom and lay on the floor in a big, wet puddle."

75 64% | Dark City (1998) - Rated 30 Aug 2020
"Really cool. Loved the vibe, loved the energy that this movie constantly gave off. It's at one time philosophical and visually endearing to look at. It might go on a few minutes longer than it should and some of its plot is more convoluted than a Blade Runner, for instance, but still a memorable movie of this style."

65 47% | 9 to 5 (1980) - Rated 30 Aug 2020
"Definitely cute. Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda are quite fun in these roles, and most of the movie is still surprisingly relevant, 40 years later. A lot of it can come off a little too slapstick for me, but I'm not gonna knock this movie that hard. It's 9 to 5, for chrissakes."

50 29% | The Wretched (2020) - Rated 30 Aug 2020
"A Hallmark horror movie, if I've ever seen one. Pretty unfulfilling on almost all fronts. The teen romance was nice and some of the witch imagery was fairly unnerving, but besides that this movie didn't hit a lot of highs for me."
|
40 19% | The Crazies (2010) - Rated 21 Aug 2020
"Expected better from an Olyphant movie. It kind of felt like a more true to form Resident Evil movie, but it didn't quite do the trick for me. A lot here is pretty ineffective and once the movie starts escaping its small town vibe, it loses even more of its charm."

15 5% | Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) - Rated 20 Aug 2020
"Goddammit, as soon as I find a franchise I like."

80 73% | Highlander (1986) - Rated 20 Aug 2020
"I live for this shit. I can't help myself. Highlander is exactly the movie I was hoping it would be and more. It's ridiculous casting works for some reason (or at least adds to my pleasure watching this) and it's brilliantly wild worldbuilding and story ticks make for some of the best 80's action I've had the pleasure of enjoying."
