64 28% | It Follows (2015) - Rated 11 Dec 2017
"It Follows the tone (naked old woman) and, at points, cinematography (the huge pool of blood) of Kubrick's The Shining, however its story lacks the depth necessary for the same character development and strong performances. Jay seems lifted from Mitchell's Myth of the American Sleepover which, in a movie underpinned by the establishment of an emotional connection with the protagonist, undermines the stakes. The result is a mediocre movie with a few good jump scares but ultimately unfulfilling."

1 0% | The Fate of the Furious (2017) - Rated 05 Aug 2017
"A plot that would struggle to fill five minutes, dragged out for over two hours! Acting- terrible. Editing- terrible. Script- terrible. If this were handed in as part of a GCSE Media Studies course (the standards already being set pretty bloody low), it would fail. Utterly pathetic."

67 31% | The Moth Diaries (2011) - Rated 29 Jul 2017
"The narrative lacks the provocative coarseness that characterised period horror- the intertextual nods to Stoker and Le Fanu a quaint touch that desperately assays to assert itself. The eldritch tone struck by Cole is drowned out by the overstylised haemoglushin' which betrays Harron's ties to Kubrick, as well as the film's derivative nature. Even in failing to flood the viewer's adrenaline glands, the Moth Diaries is remarkable only in how prosaic and formulaic it remains."

56 21% | The Circle (2017) - Rated 26 Jul 2017
"Working off a compelling premise, The Circle doesn't take long to unsheathe that it's wanting, and the sentimental conclusion does disappoint. Gillan is coruscating, serving to further demonstrate her versatility since her departure from Doctor Who. A pity the same cannot be said for Watson who channels an anxiety-ridden Glaphyra. It is a pity that the sheer screen-time prostrated to her vapid performance eclipses the chemistry between Hanks and Oswalt, not to mention Finn (sorry, Boyega)."

91 95% | The Hippopotamus (2017) - Rated 26 Jul 2017
"Roger Allam largely reprises his role as Peter Mannion in a movie that positively wreaks of Stephen Fry's witty contemptuousity toward the fantastical. But the detective narrative transcends mere secular propagandising in its caricaturing of youthful Romanticism that feeds into a wider social critique of the faddish nature of bourgeois mysticism. Very droll."

24 5% | Free Fire (2017) - Rated 14 Jul 2017
"In this otherwise irredeemable fairground of firm flatulence, Brie Larson single-handedly generates sufficient anticipation for some potentia salvâtiônis... without fear of spoiling Free Fire, as Wheatley himself has already succeeded in this respect alone, ultimately nothing can salvage this plot-less homage to Tarantino."
