80 68% Lost in Translation (2003) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"I'm not a big fan of Bill Murray, so I was hesitant to see this, but hearing so much about it, I decided to give it a try. Not only does Murray turn in a fine, thoughtful, and yet still funny performance, the movie itself is quite surprising. The humor is more subtle than in-your-face, the characters are all very real and connect to the watcher in every way, and the ending is emotionally strong while ringing true and not being overly sappy. A fine movie all around."
50 31% X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"What in heavens name they were thinking when they let Bryan Singer go, I'm sure I don't know. All I can say is, 'X-Men 3' was one of the big letdowns of 2006 for me. Being a fan of the 'X-Men' series, this film did four things the other films didn't do: it was too short, it tried to cram too much and too many new characters in that short time, it killed off characters we knew and loved too quickly and it tamed Wolverine. On the plus side, Magneto remains a very cool villain."
90 95% Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"Better than 'Flags of our Fathers', 'Letters' reuses what seems to be a lot of the same battle footage, but ups the emotional content and the action, focusing more on the war itself and less on the aftermath, as 'Flags' did. Both are fine in their own way, but as an actual war film, 'Letters' succeeds and Ken Watanabe proves once again that he is one of the finest actors out there."
50 31% Flightplan (2005) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"I admit that the entire plot of this movie is pretty improbable and not very believable at that. But Jodie Foster, treading the line between insanity and courage and making you believe in her desperation, makes the movie worth watching. Just don't think too hard about what is actually going on."
25 4% The Stepford Wives (2004) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"The original film is a classic of horror and to be honest, it totally creeped me out. So, with a cast like Kidman, Walken, Broderick and Close, I was expecting something decent. This remake is literally a joke and more of a parody of the original than anything else. There is nothing particularly subtle about the humor and the horror is all but gone. Not worth anyone's time, not even for a laugh."
60 50% The Matrix Revolutions (2003) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"A lot of people said this was the weakest of the trilogy, but I think it is the strongest. This is where the emotional center of the story comes to closure, and where the movie makers showcase the finest special effects of the series. The battle of the machines vs. Zion is visually riveting and seemingly unending. True, Keanu Reeves still can't act for beans, but the ending is strong and it is a fitting conclusion all in all."
85 77% The Bourne Supremacy (2004) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"Arguable one of the finest action series even, Supremacy stands out as the best, better even than Ultimatum. Sure, the hand-held camera effect can cause motion sickness, but there is no denying that Damon makes a fine Bourne, that the in-depth character development and moral themes are unique to the action genre can be found here in abundance and that the action itself is very good."
75 59% The Karate Kid (1984) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. As a rule, I don't really like movies about boxing and martial arts as a sport - it just seems too brutal, I guess. But this is cheesy enough to be enjoyable, the fight scenes are well choreographed and intense and although the main character gets on my nerves sometimes, Mr. Miyagi is a classic mentor, up there with Yoda and Zorro (other favorite mentors of mine). BANZAI!!!"
50 31% The English Patient (1996) - Rated 05 Apr 2008
"There is no denying that this is a powerful movie and I can see why it won Best Picture. Ralph Fiennes is terrible underrated and is one of my favorite actors and I enjoy watching him work, but this film was very trying in its length and its slow pace. The story is fine, although it seemed to be celebrating lust more than love, but the execution could be better."
