"Overstuffed and messy as hell on a narrative level but there was a time when a movie being crammed to the gills with fun bits of business was enough. Like, you know, Beetlejuice for example. So yeah, this is the most charming film Burton's made in forever. He's perfectly content to run wild with the practical effects and wild tangents and goofy set pieces, cohesion be fucked, and it's honestly a delight to watch."

"I'm a big fan of new approaches to the biopic/documentary and I appreciate Pharrell's earnestness and willingness to integrate thoughtful and inspiring messaging into this. And it's certainly colourful, entertaining and well-executed. But it's hard to shake the celebrity navel-gazing element, a sense that this story is a cute but completely inessential vanity project. Like, the audience for this is people who care how "Hella Good" came together, you know?"

"Maybe it's not right to harp on about inconsistency in a film about the liberating nature of change but this was only intermittently interesting. Like, it only lets loose occasionally, it only KIND OF makes sense, the character motivations are muddled, the messaging is both galvanizing and vague at the same time, and it just gets too dull and conventional in the second half for it to work as a big bold wild contradictory statement. Strong work from the actresses but unsatisfying."
