90 87% | Almost Famous (2000) - Rated 26 Mar 2015
"A fun, rambling coming-of-age story that treads a wonderful line of silly and serious. The characters are all at once likeable and unlikeable; they have just the right level of flaws to make them begin to feel real, although we never delve into the depth at which is suggested (perhaps by design)."

70 41% | Drinking Buddies (2013) - Rated 14 Jun 2014
"A film that revolves entirely around its characters requires a strong cast, and Wilde and Johnson deliver. A rambling will-they-won't-they story, "Drinking Buddies" can drag at times, but is propped up by the astounding chemistry between the two leads."

70 41% | In Your Eyes (2014) - Rated 14 Jun 2014
"After being apprehensive about the premise of this film, the universe mechanic grew on me and was incorporated well into our protagonists' lives. The characters are interesting (if a little stereotypical) and loveable, and do well to build such chemistry whilst sharing zero screen time. The story is a little bit simple, and very slow, which can get a bit tedious, and the antagonists aren't particularly developed or exciting. Good direction makes up for it somewhat. Surprisingly enjoyable watch."

60 28% | The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) - Rated 14 Jun 2014
""The Amazing Spider-Man 2" feels like a film in two minds. It can't decide if it's a romcom, or a generic action film with a 2D bad-guy. To be honest, it does the romcom thing better. Scenes with Gwen Stacy (Stone) are heartfelt and sincere, whereas the action feels like it's there to just fill the time, or provide a convenient time-lapse in the romantic thread. The action on the other hand is bland and rarely builds any excitement for that much show."

60 28% | Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - Rated 14 Jun 2014
""Edge of Tomorrow" is everything you'd expect to be: no more, no less. "Edge of Tomorrow" sets a decent pace and - as with any film of this type - has a pair of strong characters at its core. The "Groundhog Day" gimmick is not overused, and is occasionally used to good effect. The action is entertaining, the graphics are what you'd expect from any 21st century blockbuster. The plot and dialogue are nothing to write home about, but it all delivers an entertaining ride."

60 28% | The Lego Movie (2014) - Rated 10 Mar 2014
"Reasonably simple plot enhanced by an interesting "twist", the Lego Movie is pretty much exactly what you'd expect: a lot of fun with some silly gags. It's not the most hilarious film you'll watch by any stretch, but does include some great "cameos", with Batman being a particular highlight."

40 13% | Once (2007) - Rated 28 Dec 2013
"Calling this a "musical" implied to me some sort of plot. Don't expect as much. Often running two or three songs into each other back-to-back with little more than two or three lines between them, "Once" feels a lot more like an extended music video. The soundtrack is good, but often had little to do with the bland story. In some places the small budget is handled well, and even to great effect, but in others it tries to do too much. Don't bother with the film; just buy the soundtrack."

70 41% | The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - Rated 20 Dec 2013
"A strong follow-up to its predecessor, "Catching Fire" gets all involved to step up their acting game, with Lawrence putting in a particularly strong performance. However, I can't help but feel the series has left all of its originality behind in the first film, which was bursting with flare, only to follow up with a generic, melodramatic dystopian revolution story that's been rehashed a thousand times before (probably a fault with the book rather than the film)."

70 41% | Gravity (2013) - Rated 20 Dec 2013
"A veritable visual feast, sadly let down by a poor script, "Gravity" shows audiences exactly what can be achieved with 3D (something I'd until now considered a gimmick). Oddly, I found myself wanting Clooney to have more screen time, possibly due to Bullock not being strong enough to shoulder the film alone. For true, well-delivered deep-space fear, I'd stick to "Apollo 13"."

90 87% | Silver Linings Playbook (2012) - Rated 20 Dec 2013
"A wonderfully offbeat romcom, "Silver Linings" could have been very easily over-acted, but every single member of the cast pitches it exactly right (even Chris Tucker doesn't take it over-the-top!), resulting in a very believable, absorbing film that ultimately leads to a well constructed climax."
