"Seeing as To's movie often involve torture and murder, it's quite remarkable that this one, about the financial crisis of 2008 and it's effects (only the whats, not the whys) on three characters and their interwoven narratives is easily the one to make me the most uncomfortable and tense (the banker luring an elderly into high risk funds being an early stress test) as To really milks the spreading despair, fitting in moments of humor without ever really going full blown satire."

"A big problem with the reception of To's work is that because he's a HK director and most of his movies released in the West (tons of romantic comedies you'll never see) involve guns people expect action when he's really doing Noir, seldom more clearly than in this potboiler without a single sympathetic character (well, maybe the orderly). Dark (literally, the entire movie takes place in one night), slowly ramping up the tension and without redemption for anyone."
