Dr. Marsh Tracy was a veterinarian running an animal study center in Africa. Helping him were his daughter Paula, American Jack Dane and Mike, a local. Also living with the Tracys--and equally a part of the show's starring cast--were a crossed-eyed lion named Clarence and a chimp named Judy. The series' story-lines were largely centered around protecting the wildlife of the local game preserve from poachers and other threats.

It presented dramas dealing with contemporary problems. Examples might include a pro baseball player who had betrayed the trust of his team; a college student mourning the loss of his girlfriend in a car accident; an alcoholic struggling with the temptation to jump off the wagon; and a couple contemplating divorce. In the early years, the program featured the Fisher family, a "typical family" from Middleburg in an unnamed Midwestern state; later, the programs featured new characters and settings
