Germany is losing the second world war. A group of young German boys are drafted into the army and issued a meaningless task of guarding a bridge as other soldiers flee.

Michael leaves his job as a spy after failing a mission and takes with him Helena, the daughter of a Russian spy who dies under suspicious circumstances. They leave their past behind and move to Barcelona and open a small restaurant, but his former colleagues reappear with unfinished business and Michael is again immersed in a dizzying nightmare. 1918. The young lieutenant Theodor Lohse witnesesses the end of World War 1 and the downfall of the German monarchy. It is a time of politicial change and turmoil. After the war Theodor Lohse's military carreer comes to an end. Since mass unemployement and the different political movements of the time make it difficult for him to find a place in society, he joins a right extremist organization and betrays political dissidents to the police.
