Stanislaw maintains a job working in an art museum in Warsaw. One day, a painting is discovered missing and Stanislaw's boss blames the crime on Stanislaw. How can he return a painting he never stole? Stanislaw's boss gives him 24 hours to return the painting or go to jail. In order to flee the difficult situation, Stanislaw dresses as a woman, Maria. He works as a maid with troublesome children and demanding husbands.

A man hops off a train by the small town where he claims he was before. His presence allows to bring out the inner feelings and beliefs of the inhabitants. A man who has hidden through all of the war because he looked Jewish, even if he is not, took on a fame of a dead Jewish actor he resembles.
