An airliner makes a forced landing at night in the desert. The passengers and crew take refuge in a nearby deserted house. Soon some of the passengers are found murdered, and one of the passengers reveals himself to be a detective who was guarding one of the murdered passengers, who was carrying a bag of diamonds--which is now missing. They encounter a gang of ivory smugglers who hold a prisoner who knows the secrets of the missing people and a lost treasure. El Malo, notorious Mexican bandit, forces the Mayor of Sierra Blanca, Seth Landport, to open the safe and turn over to him 2,000 pesos, which the bandit gives a promissory note for to the Mayor. Josie (Sally O'Neill), a New York showgirl with a mind of her own and a heart of gold, finds herself stranded on the island of Fiji. There she meets an alcoholic World War I veteran (Reginald Sharland) who is haunted by his wartime experiences and has an irrational fear of fire.
