Lillian Gish is the daughter of a rich Italian count who is killed in a fall from his horse. Though Lillian stands to inherit a large estate, her older half-sister burns the will and thus inherits the property herself, throwing Lillian into poverty. In this film, the rich are either "spoiled" or have "calloused hearts" and consort with evil lawyers and have servants dressed almost like they should be at Versailles. They overwork and underpay the workers and are just bad. In contrast, the working class folks are good and loving. (imdb)

A feud between Kentucky clans the Tollivers and Falins has been ongoing for as long as anyone can recall. After an engineer, Jack Hale, arrives with coal and railroad interests, he saves the life of Dave Tolliver, whose injury has developed gangrene. Dave expects to marry a cousin, June, but she takes an immediate shine to the newcomer. Her younger brother Buddie is also impressed with Hale, who begins to educate him and take the boy under his wing.

Believing her husband, Laurence Teck, ( Maurice B. Flynn ) to be dead in the African jungle, Carol ( Mary Miles Minter ) marries musician David Verne ( Casson Ferguson ). Laurence does come home, but, thinking it best for Carol, he returns to the jungle. The shock kills David, and Carol sets out in search of Laurence, has many adventures, and finally finds him with the friendly native king who saved him.
