Life at the boarding school is all fun and games for the two friends, Bess and Dott. However, one day Dott receives an ominous letter from her solicitor: Her wealth has dwindled, and she must leave the school! Hard times set upon the young woman who gradually loses everything. However, Bess is not soon to forget her good friend and she decides to come to poor Dott’s rescue.

The young woman, Nina, works as a singer at a Copenhagen variety, but when her contract expires, she is suddenly without an income for herself and her old mother. When she sees an ad in the newspaper looking for singers for a theater in St. Petersburg, Nina strikes - a few weeks later she leaves. It turns out, however, that she has been tricked and she ends up in a notorious brothel instead. She fears that all hope is gone.

Jørgen wants to propose to Marie as soon as he has been promoted and can offer her a proper home. Indeed, his future looks promising until his father, who is a bookkeeper in the town bank, tells Jørgen that he has embezzled and spent money from the bank. In order to uphold his father’s honour, Jørgen must raise the missing amount, and the only one he knows with that much ready money is his uncle, the canny merchant Ole Konge, whom his father detests.

Nikolajsen is shocked by the news that he has an adult daughter who lives in Jutland – where wild wolves wander! His friends – the baker, the butcher, the tailor and the shoemaker – are entranced by the honour and glory they would gain by venturing forth and exterminating the feral wolves. Unfortunately for their chances of success, Nikolajsen and Co. decide to hire Pat and Patachon as their hunting guides. And so the wolf hunters will probably end up chasing their own tails.

Niels has everything a young person could wish for. A bold appearance, a woman’s love and a secure future on the family farm. Yet he longs for something else and something more. The big city beckons, and despite his father’s misgivings, Niels is allowed to set off to study. He thrives in the city, but when he receives bad news about his lost childhood love, Niels finally understands the depth of his guilt. Bravely he takes up the fight to win back everything he had so carelessly thrown away.
